Rodenbach is a district of the town of Gersfeld (Rhön) in the Fulda district . The place with its 198 inhabitants is only a few hundred meters from the border between Hesse and Bavaria.

history

First mentioned in a document on September 14, 863 in a deed of donation in favor of the Fulda Monastery , Rodenbach is one of the oldest Rhöndörfern. Its origins probably go back to Celtic times. Its history was shaped by the border location between the two spiritual territories Fulda and Würzburg. During the Thirty Years' War in 1634, Swedish troops forced the villagers to do entrenchment work. ( The border pass between Bavaria and Hesse is named after this so-called Schwedenschanze .) After the Swedes withdrew, 75% of the Rodenbachers died. After the Congress of Vienna it belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria ; since the German Civil War of 1866 to the Kingdom of Prussia . After the Second World War it became part of the newly created state of Hesse . The great fire in 1851, in which the entire village, except for three houses, fell victim to the flames, continued to shape the development of the village. The " Neitze " property , which - built in 1552 - is the oldest building structure to this day, has survived .

On December 31, 1970, the previously independent municipality Rodenbach was in the course of administrative reform in Hesse on a voluntary basis in the city Gersfeld incorporated . For the district of Rodenbach, as for the other incorporated, formerly independent municipalities, a local district with a local advisory board and local head was set up in accordance with the Hessian municipal code.

In 2004 and 2005, Rodenbach experienced a comprehensive renovation of the village.
