Schachen is a district of Gersfeld (Rhön) in the eastern Hessian district of Fulda .

Geographical location

Schachen is located in the Hessian Rhön Nature Park in the headwaters of the Fulda at 570 m above sea ​​level . It is a scattered settlement with individual farms and the place condensed into group settlement with around 300 inhabitants. history

From the village of Schachen, clearing was carried out as early as the 16th century . The black earth and cabbage stalks were built around 1595, and the number of individual farms increased further in the 18th century. In 1626, the community of Conrad and Lucas von Ebersberg, called von Weyhers, received a village order. Under Ebersberg it belonged to the "Buchschen Quartier", an imperial-free knight canton . At that time the village had a parish and a mayor. Since 1819 Schachen belonged to the Bavarian regional court (older order) Weyhers . In 1862 it was added to the Bavarian War and, from 1866, after the so-called German War , to the Gersfeld district office of the Prussian province of Hessen-Nassau .

Territorial reform

On December 31, 1971, the previously independent municipality Schachen in the wake of was municipal reform in Hesse on a voluntary basis in the city Gersfeld incorporated . Hünkelshäuptchen

Hünkelshäuptchen is named after an elevation of the same name, 668 NN high, which is in front of the Eubeberg (814 NN) to the south. The courtyard and the surrounding houses are built directly on the southern slope of the elevation. The organ maker Georg Limpert lived at the Hünkelshäuptchen from 1775 to 1851 , who presumably made rotary and annual organs. Then the organ builders Johann and Nikolaus Richter, as well as Peter Limpert in Hünkelshäuptchen are named as organ builders.

The "Eubeberg-Hünkelshäuptchen" nature reserve , with its mixed forest , as well as grassland, wetlands and grasslands, has been included in the maintenance zone B of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve as a cultural landscape worth preserving .

The name comes from Bonifatius , the homestead used to be called Bonifaziushof . Wynfreth Bonifatius (672– approx. 755) was a well-known missionary who converted the area around Fulda to Christianity around 730 . The Fazienhof is located on the eastern slope of the Hünkelshäuptchen.

Ober-Kohlgraben, Unter-Kohlgraben

The Schachen local group of the Gersfeld volunteer fire brigade is the only association . The Schachen volunteer fire brigade was founded on April 3, 1935 and had 33 members. On February 20, 1966, it was decided to build a new fire station which was inaugurated on October 18, 1970. In autumn 1998 the Schachen fire brigade received a new TS 8/8 (portable pump - 800 liters per minute at 8 bar output pressure) from Rosenbauer. In 2007, women were accepted into active fire service for the first time since the fire service was founded. Due to the closure of a neighboring brigade, the Gersfeld-Schachen volunteer fire brigade received a fire engine ( TSF-W built in 2002) with a 750 liter water tank. On June 27, 2013, four new digital radios were installed in the vehicle. In 2013 the Schachen volunteer fire brigade had 40 active members, 9 members of the age and honorary department and 69 passive members.
