life and work

Rahlstedter Strasse 49 in Hamburg. It was here that Rolf Retz-Schmidt set up his first studio in his parents' apartment in 1952. The house no longer exists today.

Rolf Retz-Schmidt was born in Stavanger , Norway , the son of a Norwegian and a German . He grew up in a Protestant home. In 1939 the family moved to Germany, initially to Berlin . Further stations were Dresden , Lübeck and finally from 1946 Hamburg-Rahlstedt , which became his second home. There he completed his school education in 1949 with the Abitur. From 1949 to 1952 an apprenticeship took place at the Hamburger Baukreis . Arnold Fiedler , Walter Siebelist and Hans Martin Tibor were among his teachers . During his training and, subsequently, Retz-Schmidt worked as household and commercial artist worked.

In his early phase as a freelance artist, influences from Impressionism , Cubism and Expressionism as well as Wassily Kandinsky and Ernst Wilhelm Nay can be seen . Since around 1953 and throughout his subsequent creative period, the cosmos has always been a fascinating topic for him. From 1955 he exhibited works on this topic. His works in the period from 1955 to 1958 can be assigned to Informel or Tachism . Rolf Retz-Schmidt is one of the few abstract painters in Northern Germany in the 1950s and one of the few representatives of Tachism in Hamburg during this period. From 1957 a special type of abstract pen and ink drawings was added, which he called dynamic graphics or linear graphics . From the end of the 1950s, representational elements found their way into his painting. Since 1960 he has created numerous picture cycles, a. a. on the topics Towering Towers (1960), Apocalypse (1962) and Circle Meditations (1963). In 1963 he created a picture cycle Cosmic Parable with pen drawings in a circle format. These drawings were printed in a reduced scale in 1983 and presented as a cassette on the occasion of the Cosmic Parables exhibition in the City Museum Ratingen in 1984, together with in-depth texts. Further picture cycles were created on the topics of light dances (from 1967), 8 big brothers (from 1970), a central theme (from 1970), world formula (from 1974), cosmic icons (from 1977) and horizons (from 1981).

Retz-Schmidt's work reflects philosophical and scientific ideas, but also social developments and political events. Christian religion and mysticism influenced the work as well as ancient cultures, e.g. B. the Aztecs and Buddhists . His numerous study trips, among others, had a great influence on his work. a. to Norway , Greece , Israel , Austria , Hungary , Romania , France , Bulgaria , Tunisia , Italy and Switzerland .

Between the mid-70s and mid-80s, Retz-Schmidt lived and worked temporarily in Ratingen and exhibited mainly in Düsseldorf . Since 1985 he has been based in Hamburg again , where his works include: a. with the city and its port and began with the cycle world theater . As he got older, his work became more and more a visual expression of his cosmic and Christian religious ideas. A large number of his works are in private collections at home and abroad. In addition, a number of his works were acquired by the Hamburg cultural authority and the Hamburger Kunsthalle in the 1950s. Rolf Retz-Schmidt died on September 22, 2006 in Hamburg and was buried in the Rahlstedt cemetery .
