Romeo Tovar Astorga

Romeo Tovar Astorga OFM (born March 5, 1940 in Ciudad Delgado , El Salvador ) is a Salvadoran religious and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Santa Ana .

Life

Romeo Tovar Astorga entered the religious order of the Franciscans and received on 25 June 1968, the sacrament of Holy Orders .

On May 5, 1987, Pope John Paul II appointed him first bishop of the diocese of Zacatecoluca, which was established on the same date . The Apostolic Nuncio in El Salvador, Archbishop Francesco De Nittis , donated him episcopal ordination on July 25 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of San Salvador , Arturo Rivera Damas SDB , and the Bishop of San Vicente , José Oscar Barahona Castillo . John Paul II named him Coadjutor Bishop of San Miguel on December 17, 1996 . Romeo Tovar Astorga became Bishop of San Miguel on April 10, 1997, succeeding José Eduardo Alvarez Ramírez CM , who resigned for reasons of age. On May 12, 1999, he was appointed bishop of Santa Ana .

On February 8, 2016, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.
