action

Dr. Hugh Kyle worries about Tuppy Armstrong, who has pneumonia, which is not without risks at her age. The doctor, who is friends with the old lady, learns on this occasion that his friend Anthony Armstrong wants to marry, which Tuppy is looking forward to. Hugh Kyle is uncomfortable with the thought of the bride, Rose Schuster, because he doesn't believe she can make a man happy. Isobel Armstrong gives her nephew Anthony a phone call to tell him about his grandmother's condition and asks him to come home on the weekend and bring Rose, which Tuppy specifically asked.

Around the same time, 22-year-old Flora Waring visits a restaurant in London and is amazed at the courteous treatment she receives, even though she has never been there. Why this is so becomes clear a little later when a young woman who looks just like Flora enters the restaurant. “I'm going crazy”, bursts out Rose Schuster, “you look like me”. The sisters quickly realized that they were twins. In contrast to Rose, who immediately comes to terms with the facts, Flora struggles with the fact that her parents betrayed her so much. Rose persuades her to come to her suite, where she can stay until she finds something else. Since Rose has no desire to go to his family with Anthony, she suggests Flora to take her place. She hadn't been with Anthony for a long time and had met a guy who she absolutely had to visit in Crete . Although Flora has declined the request, Rose presents her with a fait accompli by disappearing the next morning and Flora only left a note with the request not to let her down, Anthony is a nice guy and she will please. Flora learns from Anthony that he and Rose were as good as engaged. After the young man tells her the real reason for the trip, Flora accompanies him, even though she really didn't want to.

Flora is welcomed in a friendly manner, although she senses a certain reluctance from Isobel as well as from Watty Bolton, who is responsible for looking after the family. Tuppy, on the other hand, welcomes her with great warmth. When guests in honor of Anthony and the supposed Rose are invited in the evening, Flora senses again when meeting Brian Stoddard that something is wrong and remembers the meeting with Hugh Kyle in the afternoon, the strange hints about the first visit from Rose the Armstrongs had made. A comment from Hugh causes Flora to comply with Tuppy's request and stay a few days longer, while Anthony has to go back to London and is not expected back until the weekend. Tuppy plans to hold a garden party over the weekend. Flora learns from Tuppy that Hugh's wife had a fatal accident eight years ago but was never really a match for Hugh. The old lady also tells her that Anna Stoddard loves her husband Brian very much, but that the fact that Anna is very rich also played a role from his side. Flora befriends Anna, who tells her that after losing her baby in pregnancy years ago, she is now pregnant again. She also advises Anna not to put her husband on a pedestal like she does, since love always has to do with mutual respect.

After Flora has arranged to meet Brian Stoddard for dinner at his request, another unpleasant scene occurs. First Flora learns that Rose was in bed with Brian at the time and was surprised by Hugh, and then he appears himself and ensures that the meeting is abruptly broken off. Flora contracted fish poisoning while eating and is treated, albeit reluctantly, by Hugh. The doctor notices something that can only be interpreted.

Flora, who already feels guilty about Tuppy in particular, wants Anthony to finally tell her the truth. Hugh, who knows she is not Rose from a non-existent scar on Flora Arm, then insists that Anthony tell his grandmother everything. Tuppy very much regrets that Rose / Flora will not marry her grandson, but realizes that love was Anthony's motive. Meanwhile, Flora meets her mother Pamela, who is also invited to the party, and speaks to her. And in the end, Flora doesn't wait in vain at the station from where she wants to go to London. At the last moment, so to speak, Hugh appears and takes her in his arms.

criticism

TV Spielfilm pointed the thumb to the side, gave one of three possible points for humor, tension and eroticism and said: “From the ideally banal story of confusion, bestselling author Pilcher knits a routinely sentimental love story.” Conclusion: “Double lottery, on high gloss polished."

For the film service , the film presents itself as a “kitschy-romantic game of confusion”, “whose misunderstandings develop in a straight line to the expected happy ending in an English country estate atmosphere”.
