history

In the Middle Ages Roztocze was on the border between Lesser Poland and Rus and belonged to the Rothreußen region . In the 11th century, Russia conquered the greater part. After the annexation by Casimir the Great , settlers from Galicia , Lublin and Mazovia poured into the sparsely populated area. In the Polish-Lithuanian empire , cities emerged to which many Germans and Jews moved. Tartar incursions kept coming back.

After the partition of Poland , the area came under the Habsburg Monarchy and belonged to the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria . When Poland regained its independence in 1918, Roztocze came to the provinces of Lublin and Lemberg .

At the beginning of the Second World War , the Roztocze was fiercely contested between Poles and Germans. During the occupation there were numerous partisan activities there, both between Poles and Germans and between Poles and Ukrainians.

After the war, the Roztocze was divided between Poland and the USSR . The Polish population had to relocate from the Lviv area to Poland, while the Ukrainian population on the Polish side was resettled in northwestern Poland during the Vistula action .
