The Rote Kocher is the smallest source brook of the Kocher in Oberkochen in the Ostalb district . It is only 150 m long and is now completely piped.

Approximate course of the red cooker

The Rote Kocher rises from the limestones of the lower rock limestone formation in the Jura of the Swabian Alb . Its karst springs are located in the Oberkochen oil pond in a park that is not freely accessible on the premises of the Leitz GmbH & Co. KG company . A deep, funnel-shaped and several lateral springs feed the pond . The spring funnel is so strongly sintered that divers cannot enter the spring cave behind it.

Today's park with valuable trees forms an interesting habitat for plants and animals . The oil pond is on the Karstquellenweg .

Under the bridge located to the right of the stove Leitz site opens the completely underground verdolte Red Kocher from the left in the here already 1.4 kilometers long black kettle .

history

It is unclear where the name red cooker comes from, but it could be related to the former sword grinding shop at the oil pond and its rusty waste . By damming the red digester, the water power was used early on for a brickworks as well as for an oil and grinding mill. Until 1912, the abandoned residential area and Oberkochen district of Ziegelhütte were located by the Ölweiher .
