Rudolf Frey (director)

Rudolf Frey (* 1983 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian director for drama and music theater and has worked as a freelance director since 2007.

Live and act

Frey began his artistic career as an assistant director at the Burgtheater Vienna , where he had been involved since 2004, and also at the Ruhrtriennale in Essen and the Salzburg Festival, among others . During this time he worked with directors such as Andrea Breth , Karin Beier , Luc Bondy , Martin Kušej , David McVicar and Robert Carsen .

Since 2007 he has worked as a freelance director for drama and music theater. a. at the State Opera Stuttgart , the State Theater am Gärtnerplatz , Burgtheater Vienna , Welsh National Opera , Royal Opera House Muscat , Meininger State Theater , Schauspielhaus Vienna , Salzburg State Theater , Tyrolean State Theater Innsbruck , State Theater Lower Austria and the Salzburg Playhouse . He has also directed international festivals such as the Savonlinna Opera Festival, the Gluck International Opera Festival and Duisburger Akzente .

For his staging of stories from the Vienna Woods and Die Csárdásfürstin , he received the Kurt Hübner Director's Prize of the German Academy of Performing Arts in 2013 .

Frey was several times a juror for the series of authors "piece by piece" at the Schauspielhaus Wien and was there in 2012 in the development and project management of a theater series about Franz Schubert . He was also a member of the jury for the Austrian Music Theater Prize in the categories of direction and equipment as well as director of scenic studies at the International Opera Workshop in Sigriswil .
