Rudolf H. Weiß studied psychology, education and philosophy at the universities of Bamberg , Munich and Würzburg from 1956 to 1963 . He earned a degree as a psychologist and a PhD afterwards to Dr. phil. He then became a research assistant at the Psychological Institute of the University of Würzburg; The focus of his work was on talent and intelligence research. After that, as a school psychologist, from 1967 to 1970 he set up and expanded the educational counseling center in Schwäbisch Hall. From 1970 to 1977 he was a study professor at the Institute for Educational Planning and Study Information (IBS) in Stuttgart; As a senior school psychologist, he was responsible for educational counseling and scientific support for model schools in Baden-Württemberg. He then worked at the Stuttgart Oberschulamt for school psychology, counseling teacher training and advanced training for addiction prevention teachers, as well as carrying out empirical research. His activity at the Stuttgart Oberschulamt ended in 2001. From the beginning of the 1990s until 1998, on behalf of the Ministry of Culture in Saxony, he conducted courses for teachers of all types of schools on the prevention of addiction and violence and on advisory teacher training. His research activities related to intelligence diagnostics as well as media usage and media effects research.
Research and work
As an intelligence diagnostician, Weiss has taken up and revised the English-language intelligence tests from Cattell for the German-speaking area. The basic intelligence test CFT has been developed and newly developed by him for different age groups (CFT 1, CFT 1-R, CFT 20, CFT 20-R, CFT 3) and in different versions (e.g. expanded to include a vocabulary and number sequence test) been. This test family is one of the most examined intelligence tests in the German-speaking area. The CFT 20-R has been adapted for ten EU countries as well as Mexico. There is also a PC version for the Arabic language and an edition for people with intellectual disabilities. Weiss conducted critical research on the so-called Flynn effect and described it as a statistical artifact.
Since 1988 he has been researching the effects of the media , in particular the effects of horror and violence on young people, initially focusing on violent video consumption and later on computer games . Since 2009 he has been a member of the board of the association “Media Violence - International Research and Consulting eV” and has published several studies in this context. The Saxon Youth Study (1993) , which was commissioned by the Saxon Ministry of Culture , was developed in this context .
In 2008 he published together with Günter L. Huber of the University of Tuebingen and Werner Hopf, a psychologist in the school counseling Upper Bavaria-East, the Tübingen study violence in the media and youth violence or Media Violence and Youth Violence - A 2-Year Longitudinal Study . The authors of this longitudinal study come to the conclusion that the consumption of media violence has a greater effect on students' later propensity for violence than other risk factors. Therefore, in his lectures on the subject of media violence creates violence, Weiß calls for the “outlawing of inhuman violent media ” and “blood-drenching computer games” that “border on virtual fascism”. These conclusions have been criticized in circles of the computer game industry.
