Rudolf Hofmann (* 29. January 1820 in Darmstadt , Grand Duchy of Hesse ; † 28. October 1882 ) was a German genre , portrait and history painter of the Düsseldorf School and Gallery - Inspector in Darmstadt.

Life

Hofmann was the son of the art-loving journalist and court attorney Heinrich Karl Hofmann (1795–1845) and his wife Sophie Hofmann, née Volhard (1798–1854). One of his three brothers was the painter Heinrich Ferdinand Hofmann , another brother was the later Prime Minister of Hesse and Darmstadt, Karl von Hofmann , father of the painter and designer Ludwig von Hofmann and the Prussian lieutenant general and Freikorpsführer Heinrich von Hofmann .

After his first artistic lessons in Darmstadt, Rudolf Hofmann studied painting under Wilhelm Schadow at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1836 to 1842 . From 1836 to 1839 Karl Ferdinand Sohn was his teacher there.

Before he returned to his hometown in 1860, he stayed in Munich , Büdingen and Rome , among others . He became known through 23 wall paintings on the history of the Isenburg family in the castle of Prince Wolfgang Ernst III, created by 1853 . to Isenburg and Büdingen . He lived in Rome from 1854 to 1857 and took part there in 1854 and 1855 at the "Cervaro Festivals" of the German Artists ' Association. From May 1857 he created according to specifications of the architect Hugo von Ritgen frescoes and door paintings in the singer Laube the Wartburg , in addition to Wagner's Tannhäuser contributed to the idea of sängerkrieg to bring the 19th century back to life . In 1858 he painted the minstrel cabinet designed by Ritgen for the Wartburg.

In 1861 Ludwig III appointed him . from Hessen-Darmstadt as inspector of the Grand Ducal Cabinet of Prints and Drawings, in 1867 inspector of the Grand Ducal Picture Gallery in Darmstadt Castle . In both functions, he acted under the supervision of the Ministerialrat in the Ministry of Finance and Museum Director Heinrich August Schleiermacher . As head of the grand ducal painting collection, he published its directory in 1872, the “gallery's first high-quality catalog”, in which he was the first of the Darmstadt gallery directors to critically examine traditional attributions. Hofmann also ran a painting school at the Grand Ducal Picture Gallery. Hofmann's pupils were, for example, the history and genre painter Ludwig von Löfftz and the landscape painter Wilhelm Horst (1852–1940).
