Rudolf Meimberg

Rudolf Meimberg (born December 19, 1912 in Prüm ; † November 4, 2011 ) was a German economist and university professor .

Rudolf Meimberg was the son of the lawyer Alfred Meimberg. He attended grammar schools in Aachen , Münster / Westphalia and Potsdam and passed the Abitur. From 1931 he studied law and political science at the universities of Innsbruck , Berlin and Göttingen . In 1934 he obtained his degree in economics , and in 1936 he passed the first state examination in law. He then became an assistant to Jens Jessen at the University of Berlin . In 1937 he was promoted to Dr. rer. pole. doctorate , in 1939 he completed his habilitation. During the Second World War he was a lecturer in Berlin and was drafted into the Wehrmacht several times . In 1944 he became a professor at the Technical University in Prague .

After the Second World War he worked in Berlin again and initially worked for the German Central Administration for Industry in the Soviet zone of occupation . From 1946 to 1948 he was a correspondent for the Europa-Archiv magazine . In 1948 he became an economic advisor to the currency commission for the implementation of the currency reform , from 1948 to 1952 he was director of the Berlin central bank . From 1949 to 1952 he was also a lecturer at the German School of Politics , and in 1952, when he was commissioner for the Senate of West Berlin, he was a member of the German delegation at the London Debt Conference . During this time he began to deal with problems of the socialist economic system.

In 1953 he moved to Frankfurt am Main and had a teaching position at the Philipps University in Marburg . In Frankfurt he became a member of the board of directors of Süddeutsche Bank and later until 1960 of Deutsche Bank . In 1954, he was appointed University of Frankfurt as an honorary professor . He dealt increasingly with international economic policy, especially with problems in developing countries. For several years he was chairman of the “Developing Countries” committee in the Association for Social Policy .

In 1960 he was appointed full professor at the Faculty of Law and Economics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and devoted himself primarily to academic teaching and research. In his inaugural address, he dealt with the dispute over the exchange rate of the Deutsche Mark . In 1979 he retired .

Rudolf Meimberg founded the "Peregrinus Foundation" in 1994 to promote study abroad for students of economics or law at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, which also awards an annual dissertation prize in the areas of economic system, economic policy, constitutional law, international law and criminal law. The Peregrinus Foundation Prize is awarded every two years by the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . Rudolf Meimberg founded the Rudolf Meimberg Prize , which has been awarded every two years by the Mainz Academy of Sciences and Literature since 1996. In 2007 he transferred 50,000 euros from his assets to the municipality of Rimsting to set up a “Rudolf Meimberg Foundation” to support senior citizens and cases of social hardship.

Rudolf Meimberg was awarded the Leibniz Medal of the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz in 1999. In 2011 he was posthumously awarded the Bene merenti in silver from the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
