Microscopic characteristics of the Russulales are the ornaments of the spores that can be stained with iodine solution , the presence of a gloeocystidial system and of the Russulaceae the existence of spherical cells in the flesh of the fruiting bodies.
Systematics
The system of Russulales is changing. Further changes are to be expected, especially as a result of molecular genetic findings.
Traditionally, the species from the family of pigeon relatives (Russulaceae) with aboveground fruiting bodies divided into a stem and hat were combined in the order and compared to the family of pigeon truffle relatives (Elasmomycetaceae) with subterranean or ventricular mushroom-like fruit bodies.
Based on molecular genetic studies, the following families belong to the order of the pigeon-like:
