The State Office for the Preservation of Monuments of Saxony in Dresden is one of the two conservation authorities in the state of Saxony . The tasks of the state office include research into, protection and preservation of cultural monuments in the Free State of Saxony. The State Office for Monument Preservation is subordinate to the Saxon State Ministry for Regional Development .

The State Office, together with the Dresden Higher Regional Court and parts of the State Parliament , is housed in the Dresden State House .

Legal basis

In the Saxon Monument Protection Act, the Free State of Saxony regulates the preservation and maintenance of culturally worthy of protection. The highest monument protection authority is the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior. In addition to the State Office for Archeology , the State Office for Monument Preservation acts as a monument authority in Saxony.

Structure and tasks

In addition to the administration, the state office consists of two departments

  • Scientific specialist services

Preservation of regional monuments serves to implement the legal objectives of preserving and maintaining cultural monuments. To this end, she acts as an adviser to the monument owners and as an expert in approval procedures . For special topics, such as urban planning , technical monuments etc., the department has speakers deployed nationwide.

The “Scientific Services / Publications” department carries out the inventory for the State Office. Inventory means the recording of things that have been recognized as a monument in a directory. The state office can suggest municipalities to designate monument protection areas through municipal statutes. The library, which is run by the department, has around 60,000 holdings. The “Restoration” section offers technical support for the restoration of movable works of art and interior furnishings, as well as building-related art and stone conservation.

State Conservators

1952 the reorganization of the monument protection enterprise took place , whereby the position of the state curator was abolished. The position of head of the Dresden office of the Institute for Monument Preservation was held by Hans Nadler from 1952 to 1982, followed by Gerhard Glaser from 1982 to 1993. In 1993 the position of the state curator was re-established.
