Sénégal Airlines was the national airline of Senegal , based in Dakar and based at Dakar-Léopold Sédar Senghor Airport .

history

The airline was founded at the end of October 2009 and was the de facto successor to Air Sénégal International , which had to cease flight operations and disband in the previous April / August. It was supposed to fill the vacuum created by Senegalese aviation. In November 2009, at the Dubai Air Show at Airbus four aircraft of the type Airbus A320 -200 and two long-haul aircraft of the type Airbus A330 -200 ordered for an order volume of 670 million US dollars and announced in September to resume flight operations to want which was delayed until January 25, 2011. Flight operations from Dakar to the capitals of neighboring African countries Abidjan , Bamako , Banjul , Conakry , Nouakchott and Ouagadougou were started with two used Airbus A320 aircraft . Domestic services and routes to Europe were initially not included. The two Airbus A320s were equipped with 136 seats in business and economy class and were previously used by China Eastern Airlines and Spring Airlines . One of the aircraft was leased from CIT Aerospace and the other from GECAS .

The start of flight operations had led to a diplomatic involvement with Belgium when the authorities of the Belgian Brussels Airlines, which are very active on the African continent , had withdrawn the route rights to operate the routes to Banjul, Conakry and Freetown and the state flag carrier would serve these connections. Brussels Airlines flew to the three destinations in a triangular flight from Brussels via Dakar. The Belgian embassy was unable to regain the permit. After that, the route was no longer flown by Brussels Airlines. In November, the dispute was largely settled and the development of the number of passengers showed a steep upward trend.

In the summer of 2011, a third A320, which had previously been used by Vladivostok Air and leased from GECAS, joined the fleet . In August 2011, the Cotonou and Libreville routes from Dakar were opened with stops in Abidjan and the destination Douala in Cameroon via Abidjan was added.

Previously, on August 8, 2011, an ATR 42, initially leased by Cimber Sterling for six months, was added to the route to Praia on the Cape Verde Islands as well as the first inland route Dakar- Ziguinchor and a second inland route Dakar- Cap Skirring from 31 October.

An Airbus A320 of the company was confiscated on October 28, 2010 en route from Dakar via Conakry (Guinea) to Abidjan by the air traffic control authority at Conakry airport on the grounds that the air navigation service provider Roberts FIR had outstanding claims amounting to 110,000 euros against the insolvent predecessor company Air Senegal International . Roberts FIR also monitors the airspace in Sierra Leone and Liberia . The 95 passengers had to stay in Conakry. The result was tensions at government level and a flight ban for planes from or to Guinea for Senegalese airspace. After three days, the dispute was settled and the measures lifted.

The Arab long-haul airline Emirates supported Senegal Airlines with the foundation and start of flight operations with its experience. In return, the Senegal Airlines services in West Africa act as feeder flights for the Emirates connection from Dakar to Dubai . The aviation consultancy TASC aviation Consulting advised on the establishment of the airline.

In April 2016, the license was revoked and flight operations ceased.

Destinations

Internationally, Sénégal Airlines served around a dozen scheduled flight destinations in West Africa from Dakar, some of which were served with stopovers, increasingly the metropolis of Abidjan in the Ivory Coast in order to achieve better capacity utilization.

Sénégal Airlines has had a strategic partnership with Emirates from the United Arab Emirates since it was founded , which for example included advice from Emirates for the airline. Sénégal Airlines, on the other hand, offered feeder flights for the Emirates connection to Dubai with its network in West Africa.

fleet

As of December 2015, the Sénégal Airline's fleet consisted of two Transair (Senegal) aircraft operated by Sénégal Airlines:

Shareholder

The airline was a mixed-economy company and was initially mostly privately owned. As of November 2013, the state of Senegal directly or indirectly held 51 percent of the shares, 49 percent are held by private Senegalese investors and companies, including insurance companies, banks and ground handlers at Dakar Airport, which had excess capacity due to the loss of the predecessor company Air Senegal International.
