The South Tyrolean Sparkasse AG ( ital. Cassa di Risparmio di Bolzano SpA ) is a savings bank and now with over 200,000 customers, the largest bank in South Tyrol . It is headquartered in Bolzano on Sparkassenstrasse .

history

The Bozner Sparkasse was founded in 1854 on the initiative of Carl von Hepperger and initially moved into the historic weighing house on Bozen's Kornplatz . Based on their model, other savings banks were established in Bruneck (1857), Meran (1870), Brixen (1871), Schlanders (1873), Sterzing (1901) and Ortisei (1906). These six smaller savings banks merged between 1927 and 1935 under pressure from the fascists with the Bozner Sparkasse to form a unified state savings bank for the province of Bolzano. The bank building on Sparkassenstrasse, rebuilt in 1907 in Munich's neo-baroque style by the Ludwig brothers, was rebuilt by Hans Piffrader in the course of the Italianization of South Tyrol in 1938/39 in the rationalist style of the fascist regime .

An amendment to the Italian Banking Act 1992 ruled that all Italian savings banks had to transfer the part of the shares held by the authorities to a foundation . As a result, the Südtiroler Sparkasse Foundation was set up, to which the share capital of the stock corporation established for operational activities was transferred.

In November 2014 the bank celebrated its 160th anniversary, but suffered high financial losses due to incorrect speculation and ignored warnings from the Italian banking regulator; the bank tried in vain to prevent the public disclosure of these events in court.

In 2018, the ownership structure of the shares was as follows:

  • 65.81% Stiftung Südtiroler Sparkasse
  • 34.10% over 26,000 shareholders
  • 00.09% own portfolio of the Sparkasse

In the 2017 financial year, the bank generated a net profit of 14 million euros.

Business area

In addition to the traditional regional market of South Tyrol , the Sparkasse has meanwhile expanded its business area to other northern Italian provinces and now also has branches in Trentino and in the regions of Lombardy , Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia . It also has a foreign branch in Munich .
