The 1965/66 season was the 35th season of the Finnish SM-sarja (the top ice hockey league in Finland). Champion was for the 14th time in the club's history Ilves Tampere . HJK Helsinki , HIFK Helsinki and Kärpät Oulu were relegated to the 2nd division.

In the main round, the league was divided into two groups of six teams each. The top three teams in each group qualified for the final round, in which the champions were played. The remaining six teams had to compete in a relegation round to avoid relegation. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
