history

New ward block

1912 to 1939

The old municipal forest hospital from 1920

At the suggestion of the Secret Sanitary Council Schomburg, head of the old municipal hospital, the new construction of the municipal hospital in Gera was decided by the local council on February 12, 1912. In March of the same year, Luthardt City Planning Officer received the order to work out the plans. The necessary clearing and excavation work in the city forest began in February 1913. The official laying of the foundation stone for the new municipal hospital took place on June 24, 1913, but it was not completed until April 20, 1920 with 400 beds (only 275 beds were available) and costs of 2.5 million marks.

1940 to 1949

From 1940 the hospital was used as a reserve hospital and was occupied with an average of 150 wounded.

1950 to 2002

Former miners' hospital of the SDAG Wismut

After the construction of a new children's clinic, the expansion of the dermatology clinic in Loreystraße and the women's clinic in Vollersdorfer Straße, the appointment to the Gera District Hospital took place on July 1, 1960. With the merger of the Gera District Hospital with the SDAG Wismut miners' hospital and the Ernsee District Lung Clinic, the hospital was elevated to the status of the City of Gera Clinic on January 1, 1991.

2003 until today

On October 1, 2003, the Rehabilitation Heidelberg Foundation (SRH) acquired the municipal forest clinic. Since then, a children's center, a surgical center, a radiation therapy clinic and a palliative ward have been opened. The general renovation of the clinic began on September 8, 2006 and was handed over on March 23, 2013.

The clinic operates medical supply centers in Thuringia and Saxony and, since 2018, the Saxony-Thuringia hospice in Werdau.

Namesake Martin Luther

It is an artistic guidance and orientation system in which the individual stations are no longer designated with numbers or medical terms, but rather bear the names of important artists, thinkers and poets from the 10th to the 20th century. The wood sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider , the reformer Martin Luther , the composer Heinrich Schütz , the poet Friedrich Schiller , the researcher Carl Zeiss and the Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius serve as patrons for the individual clinics in the already completed bed block “Am Wald” . In the "House in the Park" the poet Roswitha von Gandersheim , the bishop Godehard von Hildesheim , the nun Hildegard von Bingen , the saint and Thuringian patroness Elisabeth von Thuringia and the mystic and theologian Gertrud von Helfta give the plains their names. The starting point of the artistic guidance system is the winged altar in the foyer of the entrance building, designed by the sculptor Jürgen Goertz , on which the recovery process is to be artistically represented.
