Sainte-Foy-Bordeaux
The Sainte-Foy-Bordeaux wine-growing region is located approximately 60 kilometers east of the city of Bordeaux and therefore in the very east of the large Entre-Deux-Mers area , part of the Bordeaux wine-growing region . The vineyards are located in the border area of the Dordogne and Lot departments in close proximity to the Bergerac and Côtes de Duras appellations . Since July 31, 1937, the area has enjoyed the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée . The appellation covers around 350 hectares of vineyards in the municipalities of Caplong , Eynesse , Les Lèves-et-Thoumeyragues , Ligueux , Margueron , Pineuilh , Riocaud , La Roquille , Saint-André-et-Appelles , Saint-Avit-de-Soulège , Saint- Avit-Saint-Nazaire , Sainte-Foy-la-Grande (this municipality gives the area its name), Saint-Philippe-du-Seignal , Saint-Quentin-de-Caplong and the municipalities of Landerrouat , Gensac , Pessac-sur-Dordogne , Pellegrue and Massugas . The provisions apply to white wines and red wines. Mainly dry red wines are made.
The wines
The red wines are made from Cabernet Sauvignon , Cabernet Franc , Merlot , Malbec and Petit Verdot . Due to the immediate geographical proximity, the wines are quite similar to those from the Bergerac. The must must have a sugar content of at least 178 g / l. After fermentation, the minimum alcohol content of the wine must be 10.5 percent by volume. The harvest restriction is 50 hectoliters / hectare. The red wine should be enjoyed at a drinking temperature of 15 to 16 ° C.
The mostly sweet white wines are blended from the grape varieties Sémillon , Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle , as well as the secondary varieties Merlot Blanc , Colombard , Mauzac and Ugni Blanc . Sémillon gives the wine fullness and sweetness. Sauvignon Blanc (or Sauvignon Gris) gives the white wine fruit and race, while Muscadelle gives the Sainte-Foy-Bordeaux a light nutmeg bouquet. The proportion of all secondary varieties together may not exceed 10 percent. The must must have a sugar content of at least 187 g / l (see must weight ). After fermentation , the minimum alcohol content of the wine must be 11 percent by volume. The harvest restriction is 55 hectoliters / hectare. The white wine should be enjoyed at a drinking temperature of 6 to 10 ° C. The low temperatures should rather be chosen for the sweet white wines.
The growing conditions
In general, a stock density of at least 4500 vines / hectare applies .
