Sam Tom Bert Van Rossom (born June 3, 1986 in Ghent , East Flanders ) is a Belgian basketball player . Van Rossom won the Belgian championship twice and the national cup competition once with Telindus Oostende . After two years in Italy , the Belgian international and two-time European Championship finals played in the Spanish ACB league from 2010 . With his new club from Valencia, Van Rossom won the European club competition Eurocup 2013/14 .

Career

Van Rossom learned to play basketball in the youth teams of the former first division club Gent Dragons . In 2002 Van Rossom joined the club from De Pinte , where he was active as a 16-year-old in the men's area below the closed professional league Ethias League . In 2005 the former junior international was added to the squad of the first division club from Ostend on the English Channel . With this club he was able to achieve the eleventh and twelfth championship titles for the club in 2006 and 2007, together with, among others, the German national player Denis Wucherer . After Wucherer had already finished his career, they won the national cup competition for the eleventh time in 2008, but could not defend the championship title in the play-offs . Then Van Rossom moved to the top Italian division Lega Basket Serie A to Scavolini from Pesaro . For the first time after being promoted two years earlier, the Italian club reached the championship play-offs in 2009 as eighth of the regular season, in which they were eliminated without a win in the first round against series champions and defending champions Montepaschi Siena . In the European club competition EuroChallenge 2009/10 , Scavolini reached the Final Four tournament in Göttingen , where they finished fourth after two defeats. In the Italian championship they missed in tenth place in 2010 to participate in the play-offs again.

For the 2010/11 season Van Rossom moved to the Spanish ACB league for the first division returnee CAI 2002 from Saragossa . Unlike two years earlier, they were able to keep the class in tenth place with an almost even season balance. After the Belgian national team had successfully passed the qualification in the summer of 2010, the Belgian selection with Van Rossom took part in the finals of the European basketball championship for the first time in 18 years . At the European Championship finals 2011 , however, they lost all five preliminary round matches and were eliminated early. After a further tenth place in 2012 in the ACB league with Saragossa, the team reached a very good fifth place in the regular season in the 2012/13 season. In the first play-off round they met the team from Valencia , who took the lead after an overly clear 80:42 home win in the first game in the series. After a home win in three extra times 122: 120, Saragossa was also able to “steal” the third and decisive game of the series in Valencia. In the semi-final series, however, they remained without a win against the main round first and later title winner Real Madrid . For the 2013/14 season Van Rossom then got a contract with the play-off loser from Valencia. At the 2013 European Championship finals , Belgium lost the opening game to Ukraine by just one point without their new international Matt Lojeski , who had to pass due to injury . But with an extra win against Germany and another success against Great Britain , Belgium was able to secure participation in the intermediate round, in which only one more success was achieved when Latvia messed up participation in the quarter-finals in the last group game .

With his new club team from Valencia, Van Rossom lost only four regular season games in the ACB league and made it into the play-offs for the Spanish championship as a convincing runner-up behind defending champion Real Madrid. In the second European club competition Eurocup 2013/14 , in which Van Rossom had already participated twice with Ostend, they won only nine out of 16 games in the group matches of the preliminary and intermediate rounds. Nevertheless, it was enough to move into the knockout games from the round of 16. After progressing in the eighth and quarter-finals against the German representative Alba Berlin on the basis of a lead from the first leg, they won both games in the semifinals and in the finals and thus already the third title success for the club as the record winner of this competition. In the semi-final series of the national play-offs you had home rights against the former runner-up FC Barcelona. But after there were only away wins in this series, Valencia was eliminated from the national title with the last successful throw by Marcelinho Huertas in the final seconds of the fifth and decisive game. After winning the Eurocup title, Van Rossom will be playing with Valencia in the 2014/15 season in the top European club competition ULEB Euroleague .
