particularities

The Samsung Galaxy Note II is a smartphone from Samsung with the Android operating system and the additional TouchWiz user interface . The device was presented on August 29, 2012 at IFA 2012 as the successor to the Samsung Galaxy Note and has been available since the end of September 2012. The successor is the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 .

Specifications

The Samsung Galaxy Note II has a clocked at 1.6 GHz quad-core - processor . The 14.10 cm (5.55 inch) display has a resolution of 720 × 1280 pixels and is called "Super HD AMOLED ". The camera, which is also suitable for filming ( 1080p HD videos ), has eight megapixels, the front camera 1.9 megapixels. Depending on the model, it comes with (GT-N7105) or without LTE support (GT-N7100). The LTE version also has 42.2 Mbit / s DC-HSPA + but the FM radio is omitted. Compared to the Galaxy Note , the appearance has also changed.

The device measures 151 mm × 81 mm × 9.45 mm, has a weight of 181.6 g and has been available since the third quarter of 2012 in two colors, "marble white" (white) and "titanium gray" (titanium-colored) .

camera

hardware

The camera, which is also suitable for filming ( 1080p HD videos ), has a resolution of eight megapixels, the front camera 1.9 megapixels. Both sensors are the same as the Galaxy S3, but the standard camera app, which is similar in design to the Galaxy S3, also offers a function for slow-motion recordings and time-lapse recordings. Slow motion videos are recorded at 120 frames per second with a 3: 2 resolution of 720 × 480. The audio track is omitted.

The lowlight performance is similar to that of the Galaxy S3 and is sometimes even slightly superior to that of the following Galaxy phones in the S and Note series:

  • Galaxy S4 / Note 3
  • Galaxy Note N7000, S2, S2 LTE
  • Galaxy S3 Mini (equal)
  • Galaxy S5 Mini (equal)

Photos can be taken one after the other in full resolution without shutter lag & shutter delay.

Video recording

Full HD video recordings are only recorded at a bit rate of 17 Mbit / s. The camera does not have an optical image stabilizer, but a digital one, which can also be used for video recordings.

Video stabilization

When the video stabilizer is turned off, 16: 9 still images can be recorded during recording with a resolution of 3264 × 1836 pixels, which corresponds to six megapixels.

When video stabilization is switched on, it is not possible to record still images during video recording, even if video recording is paused, as with the Galaxy S3 . The photo button is only completely hidden during the video recording, instead of being unusable.

Bit rate

As usual with Samsung smartphones, the pre-installed camera app shows the previous file size of the resulting video file during a video recording.

Bit rate for video recordings in Mbit / s:

  • FullHD 1080p:
    • Highest video quality: 17 to 18
    • Medium video quality: 14
    • Low video quality: 11–12.
  • HD 720p: 12
  • VGA: 8
  • QVGA: 3.75

The recording of QCIF video clips with a resolution of 176 × 144 pixels is, as with the Galaxy S3 and S2 +, only possible in MMS mode, whereas with the Galaxy S2 it still existed in the list of selectable resolutions in normal video recording mode.

particularities

General and design

At the time of its market launch, the Galaxy Note II had various special features compared to comparable devices on the market, including the replaceable battery with a capacity of 3,100  milliampere hours and a comparatively large 720p HD display with Super AMOLED technology and a diagonal of 5, 55 ″ and a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels and a pixel density of 267 ppi. With this unique selling point, the smartphone was considered the smartphone with the largest display to date in October 2012 . For some time now , devices in these dimensions have also been called smartlets or phablets.

Pen input

Another special feature is the alternative control option via an inductive pen, which Samsung calls the "S Pen". In contrast to the pen on the Samsung Galaxy Note, this has been revised. Interaction between the pen and the device is also possible without the pen touching the touchscreen. With this technology, called "Air View" by Samsung, you hold the pen a few centimeters away from the screen, which the device detects and, depending on the active application, performs predefined actions. For example, you can get a preview of the corresponding elements in the video gallery or in the calendar.

Camera functions

Function of the camera app: "Best Face"

Best Face is one of the software innovations that was first presented on a smartphone . Previous cameras already offered the possibility of taking several photos one after the other in a short period of time in order to then be able to select the best of this series, sometimes even suggested by the device itself. With "Best Face", Samsung goes one step further. First, a series of individual photos is also taken. The camera software then switches to an editor mode in which all the faces in the picture are highlighted. The user can now select the best shot from the series of photos individually for each face. At the end, a photo montage is used to calculate an image that uses the selected facial images. This technique makes it possible, for example, to take a photo in which all of the people depicted have their eyes open, even though someone has always closed their eyes for the actual individual shots.

Software updates

At the market launch, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 was delivered with Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean . An update to Android version 4.1.2 Jelly Bean followed between December 2012 and January 2013. This brought with it some new functions in the so-called PremiumSuite , including a. the so-called multi-window feature, which enables the simultaneous display of two apps running at the same time, one above the other (in portrait mode) or side by side (in landscape mode). Furthermore, the camera and the gallery view have been expanded to include additional functions.

The original plan was to bring out an update to Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean including some functions of the Samsung Galaxy S4 in the course of 2013 . Due to various adjustment problems with the TouchWiz user interface , these plans had to be put on hold and it was decided to update directly to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean in the second half of the year. This update was made available in isolated cases as early as November 2013, however, just like the Samsung Galaxy S III, it quickly turned out to be not fully developed, which many users saw as serious malfunctions. For those reasons, it was then taken off the grid relatively quickly.

The revised and functional version of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean has been shipping in some countries since the end of 2013. The most important innovations are TRIM support (frees memory areas that are no longer used and thus significantly speeds up the device's writing processes), new GPU drivers for higher graphics performance, parts of the new TouchWiz surface of the Galaxy S4 and Note 3, a new Samsung Keyboard and Apps2SD, which allows the installation of apps on the memory card.

In the summer of 2014 (July 2014 in Germany) the update to Android 4.4.2 KitKat for the Note 2 was delivered.
