Hans Beckmann (officer)

Hans Beckmann (born February 1, 1915 in Lebus , Brandenburg ; † March 6, 1982 in Berlin ) was an officer in the National People's Army (NVA) in the GDR . He was the commander of the "Wilhelm Pieck" military political college and editor-in-chief of the newspaper Die Volksarmee .

Life

The son of a railroad worker worked as a journeyman and carpenter in Frankfurt (Oder) until 1936 . In 1936 he was drafted as a worker for the Reich Labor Service and was deployed in Bersten . From March to November 1937 Beckmann worked as a model maker in Frankfurt (Oder) and was then drafted into the Wehrmacht . After training as an aircraft mechanic in the Cottbus Army Aviation Squadron , he became a flight instructor at various air force piloting schools . From March 1945 he was a teacher at the Aviation School Straubing (Danube) with the rank of sergeant . In April 1945, defected Beckmann and shortly came out in Cham at Regensburg in US captivity from which he was discharged after the war.

In 1945 Beckmann joined the KPD , became a member of the SED after the forced unification of the SPD and KPD in 1946 , and went to the German People's Police (DVP) of the GDR as section head of the Seelow District Police in Boossen . From June to December 1946 he attended the state police school in Biesenthal and then became a commissioner of the People's Police (VP) and section head of the protective police in the Seelow district. From September 1947 to April 1949 Beckmann was a teacher at the Brandenburg State Police School in Biesenthal and Glöwen and was promoted to Chief Commissioner. From April to November 1949 Beckmann was a lecturer at the Political Officer School of the People's Police in Torgau and was promoted to VP Oberrat. Subsequently he was "Political Deputy" of the People's Police School Primerwald near Güstrow and from December 1950 to July 1952 "Political Deputy" of the People's Police Readiness in Burg near Magdeburg .

From February to May 1951 Beckmann completed a course at the SED state party school in Potsdam and in 1952 was appointed lieutenant colonel of the Kasernierte Volkspolizei (KVP). From July 1952 to February 1953 he was deputy head of the political department of the CIP readiness in Eggesin and from March to August 1953 head of the political department of the CIP division in Prora . From September 1953 to November 1955 he was head of the political department of the KVP division in Schwerin and in November 1955 he became the head of the political department of the political officer school in Berlin-Treptow .

From 1957 to 1960 he was, as the successor to Richard Hinz , with the rank of colonel in command of the NVA political school in Berlin-Treptow, which was dissolved in 1961. From October 1960 he was editor and from 1961 to 1965 editor-in-chief of the NVA weekly newspaper Die Volksarmee . From 1965 to 1967 he studied social sciences at the Friedrich Engels Military Academy . From 1967 to 1976 Beckmann was in command of the "Wilhelm Pieck" Military Political College. In 1976 Beckmann retired .
