Sand Women is a jazz album by Henri Texier , recorded on October 18, 2017 in the Gil Evans studio in Amiens and released in 2018 on the Bleu label .
background
After his band projects Henri Texier Azur Quintet around 2000, the Nord-Sud Quintet (with Sébastien Texier , Francesco Bearzatti , Manu Codjia , Christophe Marguet ) and the Hope Quartet (with Sébastien Texier, François Corneloup , Louis Moutin ), the French bassist led from around 2017 his Sand Quintet , consisting of Sébastien Texier, Vincent Lê Quang , Manu Codjia and Gautier Garrigue . For his last album to date (2019), Texier has selected four pieces from his own pool, some of which he performed for the first time decades ago. On the album he reinterpreted them; there were also two newer tracks that the band leader had written.

Ssirus W. Pakzad wrote in Jazz thing , “Texier's music is ultimately based on very simple building blocks, which is why he sees himself less as a composer and more as a creator of melodies. On the bass he clearly structures his pieces and on the foundation he sets memorable, singing themes that are inspired by Maghrebian music and the culture of the North American Indians. His melodies have a very idiosyncratic appeal and trigger a lot when they are listened to - which is why Texier has often been invited to write soundtracks . ”But his new album is less suitable as a background soundtrack for films, according to the author,“ because the bassist's quintet delivers such an energy output that nobody would pay attention to the plot. "
The Italian-language edition of All About Jazz gave the album 4½ stars; whose author Neri Pollastri said that Texier's music was very characteristic. To say that his “pieces from past periods are 'already heard' or 'not surprising' music” “would be a superficial and somewhat snobbish judgment, however, since the compositions are great and the musicians interpret them in one way that couldn't be better. ”This is how the original“ Amir ”, one of the oldest pieces, becomes a new interpretation that“ has lost none of its tension and charm ”. The band leader, supported by the drums, leads him with an impressive rhythmic progression , while the two saxophones produced lively stories and Codjia expanded the musical spaces with his electric guitar .
Manu Codjias supports the woodwinds, which often play in unison, through the reverberation of the guitar, but always with great tonal intensity and dynamics. “Codjia shows, even more than on other occasions, the richness of his style on the electric guitar, in the solos, and even more so in the work to finish the note he performs for almost the entire album. Sébastien Texier, on the other hand, confirms himself to be an excellent interpreter of the alto saxophone, but surprises with clarity and originality. ”In the author's opinion, the less well-known Lê Quang, playing clearly on the soprano and, conversely, dark and rough on the tenor, is particularly interesting from a sonic point of view on which it really reveals a unique sound. The drummer Garrigue plays inventive and in unbelievable synergy with the double bass Texiers. Sand Woman is "a great record worthy of the best of an artist whom we have recently neglected, but who has been a star of the first order for half a century."
Andreas Schiffmann ( MusicReviews.de ) praised: “In view of the catchy title track, Sand Woman is a thoroughly classic combo jazz album, which, thanks to the relaxed manner that the musicians display when interpreting old and unused ideas, is otherwise could not come from anywhere but the present. "
