The sand fields at Volkach, Schwarzach am Main and Sommerach are a nature reserve south of Volkach , in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen .

location

The nature reserve Sandfluren bei Volkach, Schwarzach am Main and Sommerach is located on the state road St2271 between Volkach and Schwarzach am Main east of the Main Canal .

description

The area has been a designated nature reserve since 1989 with the cadastral number NSG600.105. The extension is 104.8 hectares . The nature reserve is part of the Natura 2000 network and designated as part of the protected area DE6027471, Maintal between Schweinfurt and Dettelbach.

The purpose of the nature reserve is to secure sandy grasslands and sandy grass heaths in their interlocking with forest edges, meadows, arable land, orchards, wetlands and watercourses as well as the protection of sand dunes and drifting sand areas.

The dunes are designated by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as geotope 675R002. See also the list of geotopes in the Kitzingen district and the list of nature reserves in the Kitzingen district .

Flora and fauna

Due to the drought and lack of nutrients in the sandy corridors, unique habitats have formed. Numerous living things and plants have adapted to these extreme habitats. So there are wild bees, parasitic wasps , tiger beetles , wasps spiders , blue-winged wasteland of terror and sand lizards to find.

The plants include sand carnations , sand bells and sand everlasting flowers .

Access

The protected area is freely accessible all year round. The Franconian Marienweg hiking trail and local hiking trails run through the area. A visit is worthwhile from early summer to autumn. There are several information boards in the protected area.
