Sandwig
Sandwig ( Danish : Sandvig ) is a district of the city of Glücksburg in Schleswig-Holstein. It is located northwest of Alt-Glücksburg, directly on the Flensburg Fjord .
history
Beginnings
The name of the place is obviously made up of the word " sand " and -wik , which means bay. The oldest structural object is evidently a large stone grave located near Sandwig (see large stone graves near Glücksburg ). At the street Am Thingplatz , there is also said to have been a Thingplatz .
In the 19th century, the tourist expansion on the Flensburg Fjord gradually began. Friedrich Mommse Bruhn put the seagull, the first fjord steamer, into service in 1866 and thus became the founder of fjord shipping . In addition to the excursion destinations Mürwik and Quellenental , directly south of Sandwig, the Baltic Sea resort was built in 1872/73 in the north of the city of Flensburg, on the opposite bank of the fjord . At the same time, eighty shareholders from Flensburg and Glücksburg put their money together with which they had a spa house built on the beach in Sandwig in 1872, which opened in June of that year. It had six guest rooms, a year-round restaurant and a marquee for 500 people. Every hour steamers docked at the pier. The number of visitors was particularly large on Sundays. In the following year, the two-story south-west wing of the new beach hotel was built on the Kurhaus. Soon afterwards the Kurhaus was apparently demolished and an optically identical northeast wing was added to the beach hotel. The entire beach hotel was finally inaugurated on June 18, 1875. It had 70 rooms, a large hall and a salon. It was also the first house in Glücksburg to have a telephone connection . The beach at Sandwig was also revitalized as a result of the hotel construction and its infrastructure improved.
In 1882, a second hotel, the "Logirhaus", was built to the southwest, in the immediate vicinity of the beach hotel. In 1890 Kaiser Wilhelm II visited Glücksburg. His yacht docked directly in front of the beach hotel. In honor of the emperor, an emperor menu with 12 courses and 10 wines was organized in the Strandhotel. Several times in his life, the emperor visited Glücksburg Castle (in the Alt-Glücksburg district) further south-east and the neighboring Mürwik, where he had the Flensburg-Mürwik base set up at the beginning of the 20th century .
In the 20th century
On August 20, 1912, the beach hotel was largely destroyed by fire. In 1914 the beach hotel was able to reopen. In 1919, the poet Thomas Mann and his publisher Samuel Fischer enjoyed the summer break in the beach hotel for a few weeks. In 1937 the "Logirhaus" became the property of the city and has since been run under the name "Kurhotel".
In 1956 the beach hotel came into the possession of the Evangelical Church . Since then it has served as a well-known rest home for mother and child under the name Matthias-Claudius-Heim . In the decades after the Second World War , single and multi-family houses were built in various places in the district. In the years 1962 to 1964 the Catholic St. Laurentius was built in the northern part . The "House in the Spa Garden" was built in 1968 on the spa gardens adjacent to the beach. In 1979 the restaurant "Opatija" moved there. In 1971 a sea water wave pool was inaugurated not far from the beach . At the beginning of the seventies, the "Kurhotel", the former "Logirhaus", was torn down. In 1974 the larger “Intermar” was finally able to open. Since the hotel could not reach full occupancy, individual hotel rooms in the 160-room complex were sold permanently. The neighboring beach hotel remained in the possession of the Evangelical Church until 1996.
Since 2000
In 2000 the beach hotel was fundamentally modernized and expanded by Albrecht Vermögensberatung. In 2006, the Danish native Olav Damkiær-Classen took over the Glücksburger Strandhotel and reopened it as a hotel. The wave pool was demolished during the same period. In 2007 the “Fördeland Therme” swimming pool was opened to replace it . The high operating costs of the new swimming pool subsequently meant that the budget of the city of Glücksburg was burdened considerably more. The Hotel Intermar had to cease operations in 2010. The necessary renovation of the hotel turned out to be very difficult due to the complex ownership structure. In May 2011, Herman Densch became the main owner of the building, who gradually solved the problems that prevented the hotel from operating.
In May 2013, the promenade that leads along the beach towards Quellental was redesigned. In 2017 the pier had to be renewed after a strong storm surge. In July 2017, after the renovation, the pier could be used again. To reopen the Glücksburger Seebrücke on October 3rd, a U-shaped hot dog was created along the pier, which had a total length of 218.7 meters. After the world record was established by local authorities, the “longest hot dog in the world” was portioned and eaten by the citizens present.

Planned hotel opening
In May 2018 the new Nobus restaurant was opened in the Hotel Intermar. In July / August 2018 or a little later, after the renovation, the hotel should be resumed. Full operation is not planned again until 2019.
Beach fees
Beach fees are charged for using the beach. The entrance fee is to be paid at a machine that has been broken for years. Instead, you now have to pay at the beach hotel's kiosk. In 2015 the following fees were charged: Beach use for the whole day was 2.60 euros. After 3 p.m. only half the price had to be paid. Children and young people under 18 years of age had free entry. Glücksburger can buy a season ticket with a photo for 15 euros in the town hall, which is also valid for the beach in Holnis . A beach chair cost 13 euros a day, from 3 p.m. 7 euros.
Today's ferry connection
During the season, the Viking ferry, which sails to the port of Flensburg, docks at the pier .
