history

The place was first mentioned in 715. In 1208 the place came under the protection of the Republic of Siena . In 1225 this agreement was reinforced in the Actum in castro Sancti Angeli in Colle . At that time, the town of Siena served to keep Montalcino under control. This was only placed under Senes control in 1260 after the battle of Montaperti . The Republic of Siena built the city walls in 1265. In the 1880s the place became a fief of the Salimbeni family. In the 14th century the place had a special meaning for Santa Maria della Scala as a grancia and thus as a supplier of food . In the conflict between Siena and Florence , after the Senese defeat in 1555, the place remained under the control of the Republic of Siena, which stayed in exile in Montalcino until the Peace of Cateau-Cambrésis in 1559. Until 1777 the place was an independent municipality and then became part of Montalcino.
