The UNTAET declared the region around the mountains Makfahik and Sarim in 2000 to a game reserve (Protected Natural Areas PNA). BirdLife International gave it the status of an Important Bird Area . At least 28 so-called trigger species have so far been detected here. The hilly area covers an area of 2961 hectares , which can be reached on foot from the road from Uma Boco (Natarbora) to Soibada . The heights are between 400 and 1000 m .
At Makfahik there is primary, tropical dry forest above 400 m , while at Sarim up to 725 m dry forests grow that have been repeatedly burned down. Some of the forest areas have been replaced by corn and tobacco plantations. Further slash and burn threatens the habitat of the local bird world.
