action

Jigsaw has made a name for itself over the years for constructing perfidious traps, from which it is always possible to escape, but sometimes this has to be bought at a high price. Investigative Detective Hoffman, whose sister was killed by Seth Baxter, is still assigned to the capture of Jigsaws by Police Chief Logan.

After Seth Baxter was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder, but was released after five years for a procedural error, he wakes up lying on his back on a metal table. A sharp-edged pendulum hangs above him, which - as he learns from a video message - can only be stopped by inserting his two hands, the tool with which he committed the murder five years ago, into a vise-like device within 60 seconds must and can be crushed in it. Otherwise it would be cut by the pendulum. Seth manages to have his hands crushed, but then realizes that this has no effect on the pendulum and is killed.

Then the film starts right where Saw III and Saw IV left off. Agent Strahm, who was found by Detective Hoffman along with the bodies of Jigsaw, Amanda, and Dr. Lynn Denlon finds a secret door in the Gideon building. There he finds a tape that tells him to stop looking for Jigsaw and Amanda's ally. A short time later he is overwhelmed and finds himself trapped. His head is in a container that is filled with water. He does not get a hint. Strahm can only save himself by taking his ballpoint pen out of his trouser pocket and stabbing the windpipe, allowing him to breathe again due to the cricothyrotomy .

In the meantime, the police arrive at the Gideon building. Hoffman comes out with Jeff and Lynn's daughter (the girl who ends up trapped in Saw III ), and Strahm is rescued by the paramedics. Shortly after the body of Jigsaw was found, the police announced that the Jigsaw murders had now ended.

When Hoffman visits Agent Strahm at the hospital, he learns that Agent Perez died while they were investigating the Jigsaw case and that their last words were "Detective Hoffman". Strahm now believes more than ever that Hoffman is Jigsaw's helper. A short time later, Detective Erickson appears and gives Strahm a letter stating that he was withdrawn from the Jigsaw case, which Strahm is not happy about. In the meantime, Jill, John Kramer's ex-wife, has an appointment with an estate administrator who gives her a farewell video and John's chest. Jill can open this chest with the help of a key that she wears on a necklace, but the contents remain secret for the time being and will only be revealed in Saw VI .

Agent Strahm tries to convict Hoffman on his own. He realizes that Hoffman's sister was murdered by Seth Baxter. Hoffman has lured Seth into a trap - even before Saw - and made it appear as if Jigsaw was the culprit. However, Jigsaw found this out very quickly and kidnapped Hoffman. Flashbacks show how Hoffman is persuaded by John to help him, and how the two set up their first common trap - the one that uses the NATO wire in Saw . You can also see how the accomplices build a game from Saw II and hold a "briefing" in relation to Saw III shortly before Lynn's game begins.

While Agent Strahm continues to try to find evidence of Hoffman's guilt, five people wake up in an abandoned basement with their necks tied to wire ropes. Jigsaw sends them a video message telling them that they must all work together to survive. You always have 15 minutes in each room before an explosive device detonates. To get rid of the necklaces, they have to get keys, each of which is hanging in a glass case a few meters in front of them. However, only one of them can step forward at a time, as the wire ropes are connected to one another. When the first of the five goes to the front to get their keys, they trigger a 60-second countdown. After the time passed, four of the people got rid of their necklaces. The fifth, however, is beheaded when her necklace is jerked back on sharp blades, similar to a guillotine .

In the next room, the survivors again have to find keys to open shafts set into the wall, which protect them from the explosion of the explosive devices located in this room. Another victim dies. In the third room, the remaining three people have to complete five circuits by connecting five cables to the water in a bathtub to open the next door. You have three minutes to do this before the door is sealed. However, the cables are too short so that another person is killed and used as an electrical conductor.

In the last room, the two remaining survivors have to put their hands in an apparatus that saws them up so that blood flows out, which collects in a vessel. As soon as five liters are reached, a mechanism opens the door. When they count a total of five saws on the device, the two realize that if they all worked together, everyone had the chance to survive. It would have been enough in the first room if only one person had brought a key with which all five necklaces could have been opened. In the second room, two people could have squeezed into a shaft to avoid the fatal explosion. In the third room, everyone should have been the missing piece of the five cables between the water and the power cord, so everyone would have been electrocuted , but all five would have survived. In the last room, everyone should have lost only a liter of blood without seriously injuring themselves. However, the last two now have to put their hands much deeper into the circular saw to get the necessary amount of blood. The two manage to open the door, but they collapse with life-threatening injuries.

Meanwhile, Agent Strahm finds out where Hoffman is hiding and follows him. Agent Strahm, for his part, is already being followed by Detective Erickson, who suspects the wrong person through a ruse by Hoffman and also ends up in Hoffman's hiding place. Strahm finds a room in the hiding place that contains a glass coffin filled with broken glass that had already appeared in Saw IV . In this glass coffin lies a tape on which Hoffman asks him if he trusts him. His only way to survive would be to step into the glass coffin in front of him. Strahm switches off the tape because he is disturbed by a noise. Meanwhile, Detective Erickson finds one of the victims who has sawed his hand and calls the ambulance. He also discovers Strahm's cell phone and FBI records, as well as photos of himself, which reinforce his suspicion that Strahm is Jigsaw's helper. He phoned his police department and had an arrest warrant applied for for Strahm.

Hoffman now enters the room in which Strahm was listening to the tape, and a fight ensues. Strahm manages to push Hoffman into the glass coffin and close it. Detective Hoffman then points to the tape, which Strahm should hear to the end. Strahm listens to this that if he chooses not to follow the instructions he will never be found because he will simply disappear. Agent Strahm now realizes that he was only used. The last trap starts moving and two opposing walls of the room begin to move inexorably towards each other. Hoffman, who is in the glass coffin, is driven into a hatch in the floor. He watches how Strahm tries in vain to stop the walls and is ultimately crushed.

criticism

USA Today's Claudia Puig judged: “I came. I saw. I yawned. Saw V is a terrible combination, gruesome and boring. "(" I came. I saw. I yawned. Saw V is a terrible combination: grisly and tedious. ")

The editorial team of Cinema sums up: "Hopelessly convoluted storylines, the meanwhile well-known killing machines and two main actors who can hardly be distinguished from each other make the fourth infusion of the smart hardcore thriller from 2004 an ordeal."

In the opinion of Rochus Wolff from critic.de, the film is a "bland telekolleg with blood and screams".
