Schönthal is a district of Langerwehe in the North Rhine-Westphalian district of Düren .

Geographical location

Schönthal is located on the northern edge of the Hohes Venn-Eifel nature park . By the at the Landesstraße  12 between Heistern and Langerwehe-Mitte and at about 147  m above sea level. The Wehebach flows through the village located on the NHN . The village consists of the Schönthal located in the Meroder forest, the Gut Schönthal and the Kleinschönthal located 300 m south-southwest of Schönthal.

To the north-west of Schönthal, on a wooded hill, are the ruins of the Karlsburg with the family chapel and monument park . At Kleinschönthal the Sührbach flows into the Wehebach.

history

Schönthal used to be of economic importance with its hammer mills . The brass processing industry has played a major role there since the 16th century . Needle manufacture was added at the beginning of the 19th century . Competing economic areas on the Rhine and Ruhr , new production methods and the economic crisis of the First World War led to the end of industry in Schönthal. From 1794 to 1815 Schönthal belonged to the Mairie Heistern in the canton of Eschweiler in the Département de la Roer . In 1800 Hamich , Heistern, Schevenhütte and Schönthal together have 1,120 inhabitants. In the Prussian district of Düren the places belonged to the community Wenau in the mayor's office Nothberg and since 1932 in the office Langerwehe. On January 1, 1972, Wenau was incorporated into Langerwehe. From 1961 to 1971 the place could be reached by post under " 5181 Schönthal (via Eschweiler) ", from 1972 to 1993 under "5163 Langerwehe" and since 1993 it can be reached under "52379 Langerwehe". The phone code is 02423 (in contrast to 02409 from Hamich).

economy

From the 16th to the 20th century, Schönthal was an industrial center for the brass processing industry. Several hammer mills processed the metal. Needle manufacture was added in the 19th century . The Schleicher family of manufacturers is worth mentioning here . The industry in Schönthal ended after the First World War . Today there is a hotel and an old people's home in Schönthal .

The next motorway junction is "Langerwehe" on the A4 . The next train station on the Cologne – Aachen high-speed line is “Langerwehe”. AVV bus lines connect Schönthal with Gressenich , Schevenhütte, Hamich , Heistern and Langerwehe-Mitte.
