The Schalkau Plateau is a natural area on the south-western slope of the Thuringian Slate Mountains near Schalkau in southern Thuringia , and to a lesser extent in Upper Franconia , Bavaria. It is located in the triangle of cities Eisfeld - Sonneberg - Neustadt near Coburg .

Geomorphology and geology

The core landscape of the Schalkau Plateau is a small shell limestone plateau immediately southwest of the Thuringian Slate Mountains , which is cut in a north-south direction by the Itz and its tributaries Grümpen and Effelder . To the southeast, the shell limestone changes into red sandstone , to the west, on the Der Grieß mountain , directly into the even older rocks of the Rotliegend . Due to the rock crossings, the overall landscape is one of the most interesting karst areas between Rennsteig and Main.

The high elevations of the plateau are in the north at 500-531 m above sea level. NHN, southwest of Schalkau go even higher and reach the Grieß 566  m above sea level. NHN . The high areas are forested.

Continuations and mountains of witnesses

The core plateau and its foothills in Buntsandstein and Rotliegendem are bounded to the northwest by the upper reaches of the Werra and to the southeast by the Röden . Beyond northwest of the Werra valley, however, the shell limestone formation, which initially remains flat undulating, settles up to 577  m above sea level. NHN high Solaberg west of Poppenwind . To the southeast of the Röden, the red sandstone of the southeast plateau, which is interrupted at Rödental, is crossed by the 516  m above sea level. NHN high Zeugenberg Muppberg continued like an island.

Allocation according to TLUG

The Thuringian State Institute for Environment and Geology (TLUG) delimits the natural areas of Thuringia from the plateau to the northwest under the name Schalkauer Thuringian Forest Foreland in its inner- Thuringian structure, adding the shell limestone areas to the right of the Werra to Solaberg. This brings together an area of 129 km² within Thuringia alone.

Protected areas and sights

Various smaller nature reserves are located along the former border between the FRG and the GDR . Acid soils characterize the narrow, south-east running NSG Görsdorfer Heide southeast of Eisfeld, which merges west into the NSGe Magerrasen near Emstadt and Itzaue , Itztal and Effeldertal near Weißenbrunn in front of the forest and Effeldertal .

The Bleßberg Cave is located directly at the northern interface with the Thuringian Slate Mountains .
