Geographical location

The Schellenberg rises between Kinding in the northeast and its district Enkering in the west. It extends from north to south and forms an approximately 1 km long spur of the Jura plateau of the Franconian Jura, which adjoins to the south . Its slopes fall about 100 m into the valleys of the Altmühl in the east and its tributary Schwarzach in the north and its tributary Anlauter in the west.

history

The naturally protected location of the Schellenberg, dominating the valleys, and its round plateau area suitable for settlement, a total of around 9.5 hectares, were used by people very early on. Traces of settlement of different densities were found here from the early Neolithic (5000 BC) to the late Urnfield Age around 800 BC. Found; thereafter the settlement continuity broke off. Towards the south, the settlement area, which was last used by a village community in the 9th century, was secured by two walls around 150 m long and 4 m high; they fell victim to a fire, but can still be seen today as rubble walls. A wide, shallow ditch was in front of each of these walls . At the west end, both walls were led through a right angle to the inner surface, leaving a narrow, easily manageable entrance between the wall and the steep slope free, which had a wooden gate at the end. At the edge of the plateau there was a lower curtain wall , which from a distance indicated a castle-like character. In 1907, when Friedrich Winkelmann , route commissioner of the Reich Limes Commission , discovered the facility, he introduced the designation " Schellenburg ", although there was never a castle in the sense of a princely seat here.

useful information

A transmission tower ( radio converter ) for Deutsche Telekom has been on the Schellenberg since 1993 . In 1994 the archaeological educational trail “Vorzeitfestung Schellenburg” was opened on the Schellenberg . The 650 m long Schellenberg tunnel of the high-speed line Nuremberg – Ingolstadt – Munich , officially opened to rail traffic in 2005, runs through the mountain . Hiking trails lead from Ilbling and Enkering , both districts of Kinding , to the Schellenberg.
