The Schleipfuhl is an ice age inflow and outflowless body of water in the Berlin district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf , on the border between the districts of Kaulsdorf and Hellersdorf . The still water and the neighboring field pond form the center of an approximately five hectare nature reserve . A nature conservation center opened in 1996 in an eco-house shows visitors fish, insects and plants in artificially created habitats. The main goal of the centre's staff is environmental education for children and young people.

Location and geography

The Schleipfuhl, also known as the Schliep-Pfuhl in the 19th century , and the Feldweiher are two ice age pools on the edge of the Hellersdorf district. There are largely unobstructed remains of the original landscape in the Niederbarnim municipality at that time , and they are of great importance for nature and species protection. The water levels of the two shallow depressions are subject to strong fluctuations. Only the Schleipfuhl has permanent water.

Plants and animals of the Schleipfuhl area

The bank zone of the wetland is made up of willows , meadows and wild ferns and flowering plants. It offers ideal breeding and nesting places for all kinds of amphibians , breeding and water birds .

An inventory at the beginning of the 21st century revealed the existence of 28 breeding bird species such as nightingales , blackcaps , swamp warblers and jays . Threatened species such as pond claws , little grebes and red swirls have also settled. In autumn and spring, gray herons , barn swallows , hawks and marsh harriers rest in the Schleipfuhl area. The resident birds observed include tits , sparrows , field thrushes and grosbeak . The swampy terrain also provides Moor frogs , toads , toads or garlic toads a protected habitat.

Schleipfuhl Nature Conservation Center

The nature conservation center, built from 1995 to November 1996, is a low-energy house made of wood and other natural materials. Among other things, it is equipped with a photovoltaic system , a wind generator and a rainwater collection system. The garden belonging to the nature conservation center has an artificially created clay pond, a willow tunnel with a sensory course, a dry stone wall, a raised bed and a woven clay wall for solitary insects ("insect hotel"). A clay oven is a particular attraction.

The employees of the nature conservation center carry out excursions to the Schleipfuhl area and the surrounding area (such as the Hönower Weiherkette) as well as educational events and exhibitions on various topics of nature and environmental protection at all times of the year. The target groups are daycare centers, schools and interested citizens of all ages as well as clubs and companies.

The Schleipfuhl Nature Conservation House is run by the Malchow Nature Conservation Station, which was founded in 1992, and is primarily dedicated to environmental education. The planning and implementation of biotope protection measures and landscape maintenance work are also part of the nature conservation house's tasks.

The work of the Schleipfuhl Nature Conservation Center was supported in 2010 by a financial contribution from the youth welfare office of the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district office .

The area around the lake

Tree population and path system

A system of curved paths and paths runs through the approximately five hectare area with oak and hornbeam forests . The protected and fenced Schleipfuhl green area can be entered from Hermsdorfer and Jenaer Straße. The visitor is offered an interesting variety of plants and animals, especially those on the red list such as nodding bizarre , horn leaf , dog rose and wine rose .

Pfuhl landscape in the Schleipfuhl district

The name and the park character of Schleipfuhl is made use of by an adjacent renatured area that was created by a housing association (Stadt und Land Wohnbauten-Gesellschaft) instead of a demolished children's combination: Pfuhllandschaft in the Schleipfuhl district. This demolition area, secured with a fence, is located in an inner courtyard of the apartment block on Hermsdorfer Straße (house number 11). It was financed with around 31,370 euros through the urban redevelopment program in the east and implemented in spring 2009 by Märkisch Grün GmbH . The neighboring Schleipfuhl served as a model for the near-natural wetland. On the area with a usable area of around 3200 m², some of the old trees stand like a plane tree ; Bank trees (willows, alders) as well as roses, sloes and hawthorn were newly planted . The open spaces are laid out as meadows. An artificial water surface is used for irrigation, which is fed from the rain runoff from the adjacent garages. A hill was raised around the plane tree with field stones and river pebbles, which, as a non-cultivated area , should allow wild plants to settle . The entire facility can be accessed by tenants via a short access path.

Transport links

From the Hellersdorf underground station ( line U5 ), the entrance to the park on Hermsdorfer Straße can be reached on foot via Riesaer / Nossener Straße. Alternatively, you can use tram lines M6 and 18 in the direction of Hellersdorf (get off at the Riesaer Straße stop and walk to the end of Nossener Straße).
