Reto Schmidiger (born April 21, 1992 ) is a Swiss ski racer . He specializes in the disciplines of slalom and giant slalom . In 2010 and 2011 he was junior world champion in slalom.

biography

Schmidiger, who comes from Hergiswil , has won the Migros Grand Prix three times, the most important skiing event in Switzerland for young people up to the age of 15. From 2005 he took part in interregional and national races. Participation in FIS races followed from November 2007 . The graduate of the sports school in Engelberg specialized early on in the technical disciplines. In 2009 he was promoted to the C-squad of Swiss-Ski, in the same year he became Swiss Junior Champion in slalom.

In January 2010 Schmidiger won an FIS race for the first time. A few weeks later, on February 2nd, he won the gold medal in slalom at the 2010 Junior World Championships in Chamonix . In the same month he was used for the first time in the European Cup and won the Swiss junior championship in slalom. As a junior world champion, Schmidiger was eligible to compete in the World Cup final in Garmisch-Partenkirchen : In his first World Cup race on March 13, 2010, he was eliminated in the second run. The Swiss Sports Aid Foundation honored Schmidiger as Young Athlete of the Year 2010.

On January 19, 2011 Schmidiger achieved a podium finish in the European Cup for the first time as third in the Zuoz slalom . Three days later he achieved his first victory in the same discipline in Oberjoch . He finished the 2010/11 season in seventh position in the overall standings. At the Junior World Championships 2011 in Crans-Montana , Schmidiger repeated his success from the previous year and again won the gold medal in slalom, as well as the gold medal in the combined classification (slalom, giant slalom and downhill). On February 26, 2011 Schmidiger classified himself in the super combination of Bansko in 12th place and thus won his first World Cup points. He achieved his first top 10 placement with eighth place in the slalom at the World Cup final on Lenzerheide . At the end of the season he became Swiss champion in both slalom and giant slalom.

During the 2011/12 season Schmidiger suffered from an ankle injury and had to take a two-month break. At the Junior World Championships 2012 in Roccaraso he won the bronze medal in slalom. Despite consistently unsatisfactory results in the course of the 2012/13 season, he was invited to the 2013 World Cup in Schladming . There he lost a stick in the first round of the slalom shortly after the start and ultimately ranked 28th - Schmidiger scored a success at the season finale in Lenzerheide on March 14, 2014, when he was part of the Swiss team in the team competition, which is only part of the Nations Cup USA and Austria remained victorious.
