The Schwarzbach is a - together with the longer of its two upper reaches Gundbach - a 43 km long right tributary of the Rhine in the Hessian Ried .
geography
course
The Schwarzbach does not have its own source, but arises at the Mönchbruch hunting lodge , directly on the federal highway 486 , from the confluence of the Gundbach and Geräthsbach . The significantly longer Gundbach rises than Hengstbach south of Dietzenbach-Hexenberg in a swampy, forest-near area. Its source has not been captured and is difficult to reach. The Schwarzbach flows after its origin from Gundbach and Geräthsbach through the Treburer Unterwald and the pond forest, before the stream bed leads through Nauheim . In Nauheim there is a level measuring point of the Hessian State Office for Environment and Geology (HLUG). The level zero point is at 85.91 m above sea level. NN . Between Nauheim and Groß-Gerau , after crossing under the state road L 3482 (the former B 42), the Hegbach flows from the left and east into the Schwarzbach, 1000 meters further west followed by the Mühlbach coming from Darmstadt-Arheilgen and flowing through Groß-Gerau . The Landgraben , which rises between Griesheim and Wolfskehlen, flows southwest of Trebur into the Schwarzbach. To the south of Trebur, the Schwarzbach then flows further west towards the Rhine. At Astheim it then bends to the north and then flows south of Ginsheim into the Ginsheimer Altrhein - a branch of the Rhine. The Old Rhine is connected to the Rhine again after 1.5 km.
South-east of Ginsheim there is a flood barrier / pumping station, which is closed when the Rhine floods and pumps the water that has accumulated in the Schwarzbach over the dike.

Data
According to the "Aquatic Area Directory of the State of Hesse", the Schwarzbach has an above-ground catchment area of 444.96 km² up to the pumping station near Ginsheim.
The high water level for reporting level 1 is 165 cm, for level 2 190 cm and for level 3 240 cm. The Schwarzbach has the river basin code number 2398. Together with the Landgraben and the Mühlbach , the Schwarzbach is a second order body of water.
Water quality
The Schwarzbach has a high level of heavy metal pollution compared to other countries .
It has the highest mercury content of the Hessian waters (4 to 8 times the target value). The high mercury levels come from the ditch , which drains most of Darmstadt's urban area and is obviously heavily polluted by sediments from earlier industrial discharges.
When it comes to the content of the heavy metal cadmium , Schwarzbach is also the Hessian leader. The cause lies in the tributaries Gundbach and Geräthsbach, which are obviously also polluted by sediment deposits from earlier industrial inputs.
Even with the lead - and copper -load of Schwarzenbach one of the most polluted most streams in Hesse. For chromium , arsenic , zinc and nickel, however , the values are in the range of the national average.
