Schweiburg is a district of the municipality Jade in Lower Saxony .

location

The settlement is on federal highway 437 between the city of Varel and the Rodenkirchen part of the municipality of Stadland . Schweiburg borders the Jade Bay , but there is no direct access to the sea due to the salt marshes in front of the dike . Around the place there are numerous pastures and arable land that are used for agriculture. These areas are criss-crossed by ditches and protected by kinks , which gives the flat landscape its typical appearance.

Name and Infrastructure

Schweiburger Hof, former restaurant
The Schweiburger Hof was a restaurant in Schweiburg (Jade). The building - located directly on the B437 - still exists.

Several surrounding villages also have "sweat" as part of their name. While Norderschweiburg , like Schweiburg, belongs to the municipality of Jade , Schwei is part of the neighboring municipality of Stadland . There is also a river called Schweiburg . It is a tributary of the Weser .

Schweiburg has gradually grown through the creation of several new development areas since the 1990s. The place has around 1000 inhabitants. In the 2015 mayoral election in Schweiburg, 1,018 people were eligible to vote.

In addition to the federal highway 437, the district road 197 (Bäderstraße) is of infrastructural importance. It leads north along the dike towards Butjadingen . There is no longer a train station in Schweiburg. In 1958, traffic on the Varel-Rodenkirchen railway, which went into operation in 1913, was stopped. The embankment is still clearly visible north of Kirchenstrasse.

history

Schweiburg was originally a separate municipality and, together with the neighboring municipality of Jade, belonged to the Varel district until 1933 . While most of the office was opened in the Friesland district, Schweiburg and Jade were parishes in the Wesermarsch district from 1933 . During the Second World War, the Schweiburg heavy flak battery was built on the sea dike near Schweiburg .

In 1974 Schweiburg was incorporated into the Jade community.

In the 1980s, the rural region had to struggle with demography: "The decline in population is taking on dire forms in many regions; the number of births is falling," says a chronicle published in 1986 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the local Raiffeisen bank. "The depopulation that has been noticeable for years in Schweiburg is less the village itself, but the more the rural area is affected - Sehestedt, the rest of Norderschweiburg and Rönnelmoor. Augusthausen and Achtermeer do not remain untouched either."

Elementary school and daycare

The first school building in Schweiburg was built in 1741. Due to the increasing number of pupils, the surrounding villages gradually got schools. In the 1960s the trend was reversed. By order of January 29, 1965, the single-class elementary schools Sehestedt, Norderschweiburg, Rönnelmoor and Wapelergroden were closed. The Deichschule Schweiburg grew as a result and had nine grade levels for several years. Due to the merger of the communities of Schweiburg and Jade, however, there was renewed restructuring. Since then, the Deichschule has been a primary school with grades 1 to 4. In the 2016/17 school year, 79 students attended this educational institution. There is a municipal day-care center right next to the school . It is called Kita am Deich .

Evangelical Church (St. Vitus)

The church building of the Protestant church in Schweiburg has existed since 1762. In 2012 - on the occasion of its 250th anniversary - the church was named St. Vitus. Up until now it was one of the few places of worship in the region without a name. The name was chosen by the parish council with a view of the former church of St. Vitus in the submerged village of Jadele. In Schweiburg, too, there was a chapel that sank into the sea before the church was built.
