The Schweinitz , Svídnice in Czech , is a left tributary of the Flöha in the Ore Mountains .

course

It rises north-east of the Brandhübels (780.90 m) near Klíny (Göhren) in the Bohemian Ore Mountains and flows through the moorland of the Black Pond (Černý Rybník) initially in a south-westerly direction; after one kilometer it meets the border with Saxony and then forms the state border between Saxony and the Czech Republic along its entire course .

The villages of Deutscheinsiedel and Mníšek (Einsiedel) , Brüderwiese , Deutschneudorf and Nová Ves v Horách (Gebirgsneudorf) are located in the Schweinitz valley . In its further course, the Schweinitz now turns to the northwest. Opposite Deutschkatharinenberg is the old mountain town of Hora Svaté Kateřiny (Sankt Katharinaberg) on a mountain . There is a border crossing between the two places.

To the right of the Schweinitz follows the Deutschneudorfer district Oberlochmühle at the mouth of the wild brook , before the Seiffener Bach flows out of the Seiffener Grund, an old mining area , at Niederlochmühle.

Between these two locations were on the left bank, the Bohemian side, the painter's mill (U spálene Pily) and the Schafferaugut . Both burned down after 1945.

Behind Hirschberg , a district of Olbernhau , the Schweinitz flows into the Flöha after 17.60 km. At the mouth, on the Bohemian side, was the Schweinitzmühle, a single layer belonging to Brandau (Brandov) . This former mill was acquired by the Saxon copper and brass works F. A. Lange in Kupferhammer-Grünthal at the beginning of the 20th century and expanded into a production facility.

Mining on the Schweinitz

At Katharinaberg there are copper veins that strike on both sides of the river. The mining flourished mainly from the 15th to the 17th century, when Katharinaberg an important mining town was in the Erzgebirge. Later it was less productive. The most famous mines are the Nikolai tunnel near the Schweinitz near Katharinaberg, which was a show mine until 1945 and whose entrance was blown up a few days before the end of the war. According to eyewitness reports, a vehicle convoy is said to have brought objects into the mines.

When rumors persisted about the storage of the famous amber room, the German-American and amber room seeker Helmut Gaensel from Miami , who had previously had a dig in Stiechowitz near Prague, had a new entrance drift into the flooded tunnel in 2000. At the same time, the mayor of Deutschneudorf, Heinz-Peter Haustein , opened the Fortuna tunnel, a few hundred meters on the German side, near Deutschkatharinenberg . In the tunnel, which has meanwhile been renovated by the Schneeberg mountain safety organization and converted into an adventure mine, there has been no amber room - although this is suspected. The very active and committed mayor had achieved the main purpose of his undertaking, the tourist revitalization of the remote place on the ridge of the Ore Mountains, through the assumptions and the associated public relations work .

Schweinitztalbahn

Between 1927 and 1969 the Schweinitztalbahn ran from Olbernhau to Deutschneudorf . This route was originally planned as a cross-border connection to Wiesa - Oberleutensdorf (today: Louka u Litvínova), crossing the Ore Mountains . Because of the changed political conditions in Bohemia after the First World War , the line was ultimately only built as a branch line to Deutschneudorf.
