Świękity (German Schwenkitten ) is a village in Gmina Lubomino in Powiat Lidzbarski . It is located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in northeast Poland .

Geographical location

Świękity is located in Warmia on the Baltic ridge southwest of Jezioro Tonka (Dittrichsdorf Lake) and in the catchment area of the Passarge River (Pasłęka), which flows into the Fresh Lagoon .

The provincial road 593 Miłakowo - Dobre Miasto runs about three kilometers south of the village .

It is 41 kilometers to the district town of Lidzbark Warmiński , ten kilometers to Lubomino and seven kilometers to Miłakowo .

history

Originally this Prussian landscape was inhabited by the pagan Prussians . The Passar river formed a natural boundary between Pogesanien and Warmien . After Christianization by the Teutonic Order which belonged since 1243 Diocese of Warmia the German Teutonic Knights . After the Battle of Tannenberg (1410) and the Second Peace of Thorn in 1466, Warmia was subordinated to the Crown of Poland as an autonomous duchy of Warmia . With the first partition of Poland in 1772, Warmia became part of the Kingdom of Prussia and later the Province of East Prussia .

After the Congress of Vienna, which was created with the February 1, 1818 Kreis Heilsberg in the administrative district of Konigsberg in East Prussia; it existed until January 1945.

In May 1874 the district of Elditten No. 4 was formed with the rural community of Königlich Schwenkitten and the manor district of Adlig Schwenkitten. In 1933 there were 189 inhabitants in the rural community and in 1939 there were 148 inhabitants.

On January 25, 1945, Schwenkitten was captured by the Red Army. At the end of the war , Schwenkitten came to Poland and has been called Świękity ever since . From 1975 to 1998 Świękity belonged to the Olsztyn Voivodeship and since 1999 it has been part of the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship .

Personalities

During the East Prussian Operation (1945) , Alexander Solzhenitsyn was deployed as a battery commander of an artillery unit in a sound measuring force near Heilsberg . Around 25/26 January 1945 he was stationed with the artillery unit during the fighting in Adlig Schwenkitten. When he criticized Stalin in letters to a friend , he was arrested on February 9, 1945 by three SMERSch officers on the Liebstadt - Wormditt line , sentenced and deported to the Gulag .

He described the experiences and impressions from the war in East Prussia in the volume of poems Ostpreußische Nights and in the autobiographical story Schwenkitten '45 .
