Sebastian Fredrich
Sebastian Fredrich (born January 3, 1980 in Rostock ; † December 19, 2001 in Greifswald ) was a German medium and long-distance runner . He became famous not only through his sporting successes, but also through his commitment to children with cancer . In the 1990s he was considered a hopeful talent in German athletics .
career
Holding his mother's hand, Fredrich first took part in a 5-kilometer fun run in Koserow at the age of six . Many successful student competitions followed until he fell ill with leukemia in 1993 . Although the treatment options seemed anything but promising and thus the chances of a cure seemed slim, he did not lose sight of his goal in life, to become a successful athlete. The disease could finally be defeated. At the end of 1994 he started again with light training. Surprisingly quickly, he made the connection in terms of performance.
In 1999 Fredrich succeeded in becoming German junior champion in the 5000 meter run . Further first-class placements at championships and meetings followed. In 1999 he won gold in the 3 x 1000 meter relay together with his club mates and best friends Stefan Raths and Christian Köhler and was German junior champion in the half marathon in 2000 . With the fifth place over 10,000 m at the European Athletics Junior Championships in 1999 in Riga, he reached the climax of his short career.
In April 2001 the disease came back more severely than before. During a training camp on Usedom , he lost consciousness while training and was found and rescued by a school class. After a few days in the hospital, the doctors diagnosed a brain tumor .
One last time he took part in the Lubminer Waldlauf (today Sebastian Fredrich Memorial Run ) and won. Sebastian Fredrich died on December 19, 2001 in the intensive care unit of the Greifswald University Hospital.
