At 265 km, the Segre is the longest tributary of the Ebro . It rises on the north flank of the Puigmal de Segre (2843 m), in the Regional Nature Park Pyrénées Catalanes , in the municipality of Llo in the Cerdanya and forms the Segr Gorge (Gorges du Sègre) on the first ten kilometers of its length . Many smaller mountain streams flow into the Segre in the upper reaches. After the exclave of Llívia , it passes the Spanish border at Puigcerdà and flows further west to La Seu d'Urgell , where the Valira (la Valira Gran) flows, which drains over 90% of the territory of Andorra . Here is the Parc Olímpic del Segre , where canoe competitions from the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona were held.
The Segre runs in a south-westerly direction on Catalan territory until shortly before its confluence with the Ebro near the small town of Mequinenza , which is located in the eastern tip of the province of Saragossa in Aragon . The Ebro is dammed up above the confluence of the Segre to form a large lake ( Embalse de Mequinenza , called Mar de Aragón), the mouth is in the storage area of the Pantà de Riba-roja . To the south of Fraga , the almost equal tributary Cinca flows into the Segre.
By far the largest city on the river is Lleida , capital of the province of the same name .
