action

In the style of a video report, the viewer gradually gets to know the six protagonists and their views on sexuality, relationships (and above all their relationship problems). It turns out that they are all connected via detours. Thomas Reilly, who grew up in Queens , moves to Manhattan , where he establishes himself and works as a television producer. One day his girlfriend breaks up and throws him out of their shared apartment. Reilly makes an appointment with other women and meets the divorced teacher Maria Tedesko. Real estate agent Annie Matthews is married to ten-year-old dentist Griffin Ritso, who cheats on her with 19-year-old waitress Ashley. Matthews becomes suspicious and makes friends with Reilly. Meanwhile, Ashley urges her lover to have a real relationship with no hide and seek. She meets the musician Benjamin Bazler, who works as a doorman in a hotel and is working on a career as a musician. Bazler was previously married to Maria Tedesko and gives her a talk. Nevertheless, he falls in love with Ashley, who in turn would not be averse to a relationship with Bazler; but initially instrumentalized him to make Ritso jealous and to induce a divorce. Maria, on the other hand, has a brief but momentous affair with TV producer Tommy, who also doesn't seem to be entirely averse to Griffin's wife Annie. Ashley eventually breaks up with Ritso and falls into a relationship with Bazler, but is torn between the two. Annie gets behind the affair and confronts Ritso and breaks up with him and falls in love with Reilly. He, in turn, believes Maria doesn't want to know anything more about him. However, she is pregnant and wants to leave town.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that some people might see the film as "an insightful glimpse" into the lives of six New Yorkers, while others see it as "another boring ego trip." The truth is somewhere in between. The dialogues have a "natural, informal rhythm". Berardinelli was happy to have seen the film, but he had no intellectual experience ("I left the theater glad to have seen the film, although not transported to some higher intellectual or spiritual plane"). Nothing in this film takes on the heights of Der Stadtneurotiker or Manhattan , but it can be compared to less acclaimed films by Woody Allen.

Rotten Tomatoes compared the "witty and funny" film with the films of Woody Allen , to which the camera work contributed. The representations received praise, especially those by Stanley Tucci. The "egocentric" characters seem to be preoccupied with "banal" problems.

The lexicon of international films wrote: “A romantic comedy that is as charming as it is humorous, based on classic literary patterns, the quality of which lies primarily in the carefully captured everyday language and behavior of the protagonists, which is reinforced by the good performance."
