The resin Groundsel ( Senecio hercynicus ) is a plant of the genus Senecio ( Senecio ) within the family of Compositae (Asteraceae).

Vegetative characteristics

The resin ragwort is a perennial herbaceous plant that usually reaches heights of 60 to 180 centimeters. The plants are usually quite slender and only branch upright in the area of ​​their inflorescence .

The leaves sit on the stem and are usually eyed. The leaves are undivided, oblong and lanceolate and about three times as long as they are wide; its edge is serrated. The leaves are bare or almost bare on both sides. Another criterion for differentiating it from the very similar Fuchs's ragwort ( Senecio ovatus ) in addition to the eared leaf base is the presence of glandular hairs on the outer bracts.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from August to October. The calyx of the flower heads consists of three to five outer bracts of an inner envelope and nine to eleven bracts (involucre leaves). The cup-shaped inflorescences usually contain five yellow ray florets with a linear tongue and twelve to 18 yellow tubular florets .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40.

Occurrence

Harz ragwort is found in nutritious, shady and moist forests, especially mixed forests . It thrives in societies of the order Adenostyletalia, the class Epilobietea, the association Tilio-Acerion as well as in the association Aceri-Fagetum. It is widespread in the European low mountain ranges and in the Alps . Harz ragwort can only be found at altitudes above about 800 meters. In Bavaria, the Harz ragwort occurs only in the Rhön , the Bavarian Forest and the Allgäu . In the Allgäu Alps, it rises from 800–840 meters south of the old towns in Bavaria to an altitude of 1450 meters between Schoppernau and Diedamsalpe in the Vorarlberg part.

Systematics

Depending on the author, Art Senecio hercynicus is divided into two subspecies and / or two varieties.

According to Euro + Med, Senecio hercynicus comprises the following subspecies:

  • Senecio hercynicus Herborg subsp. hercynicus : It occurs in Central, South and Southeastern Europe .
  • Senecio hercynicus subsp. dacicus (Hodálová & Marhold) Greuter (Syn .: Senecio dacicus Hodálová & Marhold ): It occurs in Romania .
  • Senecio hercynicus subsp. dalmaticus (Griseb.) Greuter (Syn .: Senecio nemorensis subsp. dalmaticus (Griseb.) Nyman , Senecio jacquinianus var. expansus Boiss. & Heldr. ): It occurs on the Balkan Peninsula .
  • Senecio hercynicus subsp. durmitorensis Herborg : It occurs only in Montenegro .
  • Senecio hercynicus subsp. ucranicus (Hodálová) Greuter : It occurs in Poland , Slovakia , Ukraine and Romania.
