Sergei Petrovich Kljugin

Sergei Petrovich Kljugin ( Russian Сергей Петрович Клюгин , English transcription Sergey Klyugin ; born March 24, 1974 in Kineshma , Ivanovo Oblast ) is a former Russian high jumper and Olympic champion .

After a second place at the Junior European Championships in 1991 and a fifth place at the Junior World Championships in 1992, Kljugin jumped over 2.30 meters for the first time in 1997. At the 1997 World Championships in Athens, he finished eleventh with 2.29 meters. The following year he jumped his best height of 2.36 meters at the Weltklasse Zürich meeting . At the European Championships in Budapest in 1998 he won bronze with 2.32 meters behind Artur Partyka from Poland and Dalton Grant from Britain .

His greatest success was the Olympic victory at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. He was the only competitor to jump over 2.35 meters; Another six jumpers had crossed 2.32 meters, but then failed at 2.35 meters when it started raining. The Cuban world record holder Javier Sotomayor won silver . At the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, Sotomayor finished fourth with 2.33 meters, Kljugin and Stefan Holm finished fifth with 2.30 meters. After Sotomayor was later banned for doping, Holm and Kljugin moved up to fourth place.

Kljugin became Russian champions in 2000 and 2001. With a height of 1.92 meters, his competition weight was 82 kg.
