Sergei Samoilowitsch Steinberg

Sergei Samoilowitsch (Samuilowitsch) Steinberg ( Russian Сергей Самойлович (Самуилович) Штейнберг ; born September 26, jul. / 8. October  1872 greg. In Moscow , † 7. September 1940 in Sverdlovsk ) was a Russian Metallurg , metallurgist and university teachers .

Life

Steinberg, son of the Jewish doctor and psychiatrist Samuil Iwanowitsch Steinberg , studied at the Bergakademie Freiberg with a degree in 1906. He then worked as a master at the Siemens-Martin furnace at the Jurjusaner ironworks . From 1910 to 1919 he headed the metallography laboratory of the Motovilichinskije zavody in Perm . Then he was head of Elektrometallurgie Department of trusts Uralmet in Zlatoust . Together with AF Gramolin, he constructed an electric arc furnace .

After the October Revolution he was the first to develop a process for the production of high-strength steel wire in the USSR from 1922 to 1923 and introduced it to the Belorezk steel wire works for the production of steel cables. From 1925 he headed the chair for metallurgy and heat treatment of the Urals Polytechnic Institute in Sverdlovsk (1927 appointed professor). To this end, he founded the Ural Department of the Institute for Metals in 1926 and headed it until 1930. This makes him the founder of the Urals School of Metallurgy. Vissarion Dmitrijewitsch Sadowski and Vitaly Jakowlewitsch Subow belonged to his students . In 1930 he initiated the work for the production of electrical steel in Werx-Issetski- Metallurgy -Werk in Sverdlovsk (founded in 1726 by Georg Wilhelm Henning ). From 1932 Steinberg worked in the Ural Department of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR). In 1934 he became a doctor of technical sciences . In 1939 he became head of the Institute for Metallurgy, Metallurgy and Physics of Metals of the Ural Department of the AN-SSSR and a corresponding member of the AN-SSSR.
