Shawn Myers (born May 26, 1969 in Palo Seco ) is a Trinidadian - British basketball player . Myers began playing basketball professionally late, and after studying in the United States, he turned professional in Europe, where he has been active in the British Basketball League (BBL) since 2001 . Myers, " top scorer " of the BBL in the 2001/02 season , won the BBL play-offs in 2003 with Scottish Rocks .

Career

Myers initially operated football as the main sport and trained as a goalkeeper with the national football team of Trinidad and Tobago . A local basketball coach encouraged him to play basketball at a competitive level, and Myers switched sports to seek an athletic scholarship for basketball players in the United States. After initially getting a place at Saint Petersburg College in Florida , he moved to the University of West Georgia in 1995 , where he played for the Braves college team in the Gulf South Conference of NCAA Division II. Here he was chosen twice in 1996 and 1997 among the top ten players of the Conference.

Although Myers did not have the best qualifications for a professional career as a basketball player, given his advanced age of 28 years and an education at a US division II college, he tried his hand at the basketball club from Šilutė in Europe in the 1997/98 season , where he played with the young Marijonas Petravičius , among others , who still had a degree in the USA ahead of him. For the 1998/99 season he got a contract in the Finnish Korisliiga with Pyrbasket from Tampere . Just like a year earlier at Šilutė, he was eliminated with Pyrbasket in the first play-off round for the national championship. From 1999 he played for two years in Iceland for Tindastóll from Sauðárkrókur . In his second season 2000/01 he put on a " double-double " on average and was named " Most Valuable Player " (MVP) of the league. The English coach Tony Garbelotto , who had previously worked in the Icelandic league, then brought him into the British Basketball League (BBL) with the Eagles from Newcastle-upon-Tyne . As the " top scorer " of the league, Myers led the Eagles to the quarter-finals of the play-offs, in which they lost to the Brighton Bears after extra time . After working for the Napier Hawks from New Zealand in the southern hemisphere during the European summer , he returned to England in 2002.

For the 2002/03 season, Myers joined the Chester Jets , who had dominated the BBL in the preseason and won all titles. After three appearances for this club, however, he moved to the only Scottish team of the BBL, the Scottish Rocks, which had moved their home ground near Glasgow . The Rocks only reached the play-offs as sixth-placed team in the regular season, in which they surprisingly defeated defending champions Chester Jets in the first round, whom Myers had left in strife, and then advanced to the final, in which they then defeat the Brighton Bears was able to and won the first title in the history of the club since joining the BBL. Myers has been named MVP of the play-offs. In the following 2003/04 season, Myers played again for the Newcastle Eagles, who also reached the play-offs in sixth place, but could not repeat the "miracle" of the Rocks a season before and were eliminated in the first round. For the 2004/05 season, Myers made his peace with the Jets and went back to Chester. In the League Cup BBL Trophy they missed the fourth title success in a row after a semi-final defeat in extra time against Myers' former team Eagles. As the main round first one moved into the play-off final with BBL-MVP Trey Moore and met again on the main round second Eagles. This game was also just lost by three points. In the following season, the Eagles were even more dominant and won all titles, while Myers just reached the play-offs with the Jets and was eliminated in the first round.

For the 2006/07 season Myers went to the Riders from Leicester , for which he completed only ten season appearances after injuries. The Riders only won 13 of their 36 main round games, which was seventh enough for a place in the play-offs, but did not prevent them from being eliminated in the first play-off round. In the summer of 2007 Myers played this time in the ABA in Geelong, Australia for the local team Supercats, which won their regional conference, but could not defend their title in the national finals. Subsequently, Myers returned to Chester to the club now trading as Cheshire Jets , which clearly lost in the BBL cup competitions to defending champions Newcastle Eagles and were eliminated before reaching the finals. Myers put on a double-double with just under 24 points and a good eleven rebounds per game in just twelve appearances this season , but after financial problems the Jets only reached the penultimate place in the table with only nine wins of the season. Even with the Geelong Supercats, Myers could not celebrate any successes in summer 2008 and returned to Chester despite the troubled preseason. Trey Moore was MVP a second time, but won for the Newcastle Eagles, the BBL Trophy, regular season and play-offs. For Myers and the Jets, after eighth place in the main round, there was a comparatively narrow first round defeat with five points difference against the Eagles. In the 2009/10 season, the Cheshire Jets went uphill again. In the cup competitions BBL Cup and BBL Trophy each reached the final, but they were lost to the Sheffield Sharks and defending champion Newcastle Eagles. As the main round fourth you had to accept a defeat against the Everton Tigers of coach Garbelotto in the first play-off round , who then surprisingly won the title.

For the 2010/11 season, the now 41-year-old Myers changed teams again and went to the Lions in Milton Keynes . However, the Lions did not have a particularly competitive team and ended the season third from bottom of the table, although Myers came very close to a double-double with over 14 points and nine rebounds on average. In the 2011/12 season Myers was back in Chester, for which he was only used at the beginning of the season. In the following 2012/13 season, Myers returned to the squad of the Jets. Under a new owner, these ran into massive liquidity problems and were temporarily suspended from gaming operations by the league management. Within four weeks, a new consortium of supporters took over the game operations and the team was allowed to play again as Phoenix, while the naming rights remained with the old owner. The new Phoenix reached the penultimate place in the table at the end of the season with ten wins of the season, whereby the almost 44-year-old Myers was in the range of a double-double with just under eleven points and nine rebounds per game. In June 2013, Myers agreed to join the Chester franchise executives for another season.
