history

With the signing of the Supreme Act of November 3, 1534, with which the Anglican State Church was declared and the secession from the Roman Catholic Church was accomplished, a bloody persecution of Catholics began in England . In 1560, Queen Elizabeth I (1533–1603) proclaimed the Anglican state church in Ireland , too, with persecution concentrated on bishops , priests and active Catholic lay people . A total of 600 victims are recorded who died as a result of their faith in England and Wales , of which 285 were killed, of which 42 were canonized martyrs. From Ireland, Oliver Plunkett , John Cornelius , Ralph Corbie , John Carey , John Roche and Patrick Salmon and Charles Meehan were canonized.

beatification

The beatification process for 460 Irish martyrs began in Ireland in 1891, 258 of which were confirmed by the Diocesan Commission of the Archdiocese of Dublin. The process was difficult because not all of the candidates' data and the martyrdom were available - or could not be proven. On July 6, 1991, John Paul II signed the decree of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints , recognizing the martyrdom of 17 people and declaring them “ Venerable Servants of God ”. On September 27, 1992, four bishops, six priests, one lay brother, five lay men and one lay woman were beatified by John Paul II. The memorial day for the 17 blessed is June 20, the anniversary of Archbishop Dermot O'Hurley's death.
