Silver Bay is located on the north shore of Lake Superior , the westernmost and highest of the Great Lakes . The place is not far from the border with Canada and on the lake across from Wisconsin and Michigan . Silver Bay lies at 47 ° 17'40 "north latitude, 91 ° 15'27" west longitude and extends over 21.65 km², which is spread over 20.43 km² of land and 1.22 km² of water.
Neighboring places of Silver Bay are Beaver Bay (on the southwestern city limits) and Illgen City (7.9 km northeast).
The closest major cities are Thunder Bay in the Canadian province of Ontario (216 km northeast) and Duluth (88.7 km southwest). Minneapolis , Minnesota's largest city, is 336 km southwest.

The main street of Silver Bay is formed by Minnesota State Route 61, which runs along the north shore of Lake Superior . All other roads are subordinate country roads, partly unpaved roads and inner-city connecting routes.

history
Silver Bay emerged from a settlement founded in 1954 on the northeastern edge of Beaver Bay. There, the mining company Reserve Corporation loaded the taconite from Babbitt , 100 km north-west, onto ships and brought it to steel processing companies around the Great Lakes.
In the 1960s it became known that the Reserve Corporation was dumping its spoil in the Upper Lake. In 1972, the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899 prevented the company from further dumping harmful substances in federal waters.
