history

Meaning of the place name

The place name Sitterswald goes back to the forest name Sitterswald and is found only once as a place name in the Federal Republic of Germany. The forest was under the spell of Rilchingen-Hanweiler, was cleared in 1935 and made available for the construction of the settlement. This forest gave the new village its name.

The part of the name Sitters- (Seiters-) is interpreted differently. As shallow, swampy land or as land that has been cleared for clearing.

Local history

Before 1935, the ground on which Sitterswald was built shared the history of Rilchingen-Hanweiler. The foundation stone for the village of Sitterswald was laid in 1935.

In 1935, the construction of the small settlement Sitterswald, which was initially called the "Auersmacher settlement", came about in a rush. It was supposed to be a village which, like all the other villages in the area, had not grown organically, but was designed on the drawing board.

The draft for this came from the Reichsheimstätte of the NSDAP and the DAF and was implemented after the Saarland returned to the German Reich. Such settlements emerged at the same time in Griesborn, Dorf im Warndt and in Neunkirchen-Haus Furpach.

Initially, 215 settlement sites, 10 large settlement sites and 17 private homes were planned. A church was planned for today's jellyfish fountain, an after-work house at the former Bur bakery. Parts of the mill forest were intended for the sports field. This plan was largely retained, but there were changes in the location of the church and the sports field. The 10 large settlement sites and the 17 private homes were never built either.

In September 1935 the groundbreaking ceremony took place in the “Naualmet” corridor, today Ellwiesergarten.

On June 25, 1937, the Reichskommissariat dealt with the construction of a new school building in the Auersmacher-Sitterswald settlement. A gymnasium was also planned to be built at the same time as the school building. However, it was not realized until after the Second World War .

The construction of the Sitterswald settlement was also of importance in terms of foreign policy from the outset. It was not for nothing that they were placed on the border with France. They wanted the settlement to be seen from Saargemünd. The aim was to show what the German Reich is doing for its people. In some French-language reports, the settlement is called "Hitlerdorf", "Hitlersdorf" or "Adolf-Hitler-Dorf".

The Catholic Church was built between 1952 and 1956.

On January 1, 1974, Sitterswald was incorporated into the Kleinblittersdorf community.

In 1977 Sitterswald emerged as the winner of the national competition “ Our village should be more beautiful ”. A partnership with Behringen (Thuringia) has existed since 1992 . There is a lively exchange between the Sitterswald and Behringen associations with mutual visits. The partnership is largely shaped by the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Sitterswald eV.

Since 1995 a pedestrian bridge over the Blies has been connecting Germany with France as a friendship bridge. On the French side of the bridge, in the Sarreguemines district of Neunkirchen, is the Bliesmühle, a former Wackenmühle that was used to produce earthenware mass. Today it houses a themed museum for earthenware technology. The important collection of machines and special hand tools for the ceramic industry is unique in Europe.
