Slania / Evocation I - The Arcane Metal Hammer Edition is a compilation by the Swiss pagan metal band Eluveitie . It was released exclusively as a bonus CD in the Metal Hammer issue 5/2009 on April 15, 2009.
background
Since Evocation I - The Arcane Dominion was only released on April 17th, 2009, some songs from this album were released two days earlier with the compilation. However, this is due to the fact that due to a bug in the booklet printing, Evocation could not be published until April 17th instead of April 11th as planned.
The compilation consists of songs by Slania and Evocation I - The Arcane Dominion . Since the Kirder brothers left the band between the two albums and were replaced by Kay Brem and Päde Kistler, Sevan and Rafi Kirder for the last time and Kay Brem for the first time are on "Slania / Evocation I - The Arcane Metal Hammer Edition" and Päde Kistler to hear.
Emergence
Eluveitie began recording Slania's songs on August 19, 2007 in the Swedish Fascination Street Studio in Örebro with Jens Bogren as producer. The recordings of the acoustic instruments took place in September 2007 in various studios in Switzerland and the surrounding area, as the costs for acoustic recordings in the Fascination Street Studio would have exceeded the budget.
The songs, which can also be found on Evocation I - The Arcane Dominion , were recorded in December 2008 in Liechtenstein's “Devils Studio” in Vaduz and in the Swiss “Ballhorn Studio” in Winterthur , which specializes in instrumental music. In the studio, the band took on many tasks themselves for the first time, such as engineering and production . The mixing took Arto Tuunela in Finnish Finnvox Studios in January 2009, mastered the album was by Mika Jussila. Chrigel Glanzmann chose the songs personally. The Slania Folk Medley was composed and recorded especially for this compilation.
style
Stylistically, the album combines the character of the melodic death metal album "Slania" with that of the acoustic folk album "Evocation I - The Arcane Dominion".
The melodies are strongly based on Celtic and Irish folk songs and are played with traditional instruments in addition to the typical instruments of a metal band (electric guitar, electric bass, drums). The band uses tin whistle , Scottish bagpipe , fiddle , mandola , mandolin , uilleann pipes , bodhrán or hurdy-gurdy on the album . In the songs that were taken from Evocation , there is no electric guitar and electric bass.
In contrast to the two previous albums , Spirit and Slania , Anna Murphy takes on large parts of the vocals on the compilation. The texts are written in Gaulish or English ; In the songs of Evocation , they partly come from pictures and bowls that were discovered during excavations in the last two centuries.

Contents of the songs
- The short text of "The Arcane Dominion" comes from an old Gaulish inscription and has mythological and magical content.
- "Gray Sublime Archon" and "Bloodstained Ground" are about the battle for Bibracte in the Gallic War . "Gray Sublime Archon" is written from the perspective of a Helvetic prince based on Divico .
- “Brictom” is based on an original Old Gaulish text depicting a curse that was used by women.
- "Inis Mona" is based on a traditional folk melody from France and tells the story of a Celtic druid who looks back on his life. Inis Mona is the name of a Welsh island (now Anglesey ), on which a Celtic training center for druids was. Families from all over the Celtic region sent their chosen boys to this site. The training itself could well be twenty years. The protagonist enjoyed such an education and then worked in the service of a Celtic prince. At the end of his life, he thinks back to his youth on Inis Mona, which had a decisive influence on his life.
- "Memento" is a purely instrumental piece.
- "Bloodstained Ground" portrays the thoughts of a Gallic warrior shortly before the battle, while he sees the Roman troops marching on the horizon. In an interview with Metal Hammer Chrigel said that of all the songs on Slania, “Bloodstained Ground” best expresses Eluveitie's attitude.
- “Within the Grove” is also an instrumental piece.
- "The Cauldron of Renascence" is based on the same inscription as "The Arcane Dominion" and draws on the mythological fountain of youth, a huge cauldron into which men who were wounded or fallen in battle were thrown in order to be able to emerge recovered and alive.
- "The Somber Lay" deals with the autumn period after the Elembivos festival. It is based on the poem Düsterreigen by Eilthireach, an author of several essays on Celtic culture.
- "Omnos" is about a girl who wanted to sing and pick flowers with a wolf. The wolf, however, wanted to "hunt the flower of their youth", sexually abuse them.
- The lyrics to "Slanias Song" were written by David Stifter, who lectures at the Celtological seminar at the University of Vienna . It is a patriotic ode to the homeland Helvetia from the perspective of the Celtic tribe, to which Slania also belonged.
- In “Voveso In Mori” the lyrical self complains about suffering that has happened to it, which has not been specified.
- "Slania [Folk Medley]" is a medley that consists of melodies from the Slania album and was first published on the compilation.
