The place was mentioned for the first time in 1176. In 1290 the place received from its owner, the Poznan bishop Johann, Neumarkt city rights . On January 11, 1314, Władysław I. Ellenlang in Slupca granted the Poznan Bishop Andreas, owner of the city, the right to erect a coin in the city , the minting of which should be valid throughout Poland . The small town was surrounded by walls in the Middle Ages. In 1331 it was destroyed by fire.

Due to the second partition of Poland , the city came temporarily to Prussia from 1793 to 1807 . From 1807 to 1815, Słupca was part of the Duchy of Warsaw and then part of Congress Poland . The town lost its town charter in 1867, but was regained in 1932.

During the German occupation in World War II , it bore the German name Grenzhausen . The city had a Roman Catholic Church, a Greek Catholic Church and a synagogue.
