Soul Boy is the debut film by the Ghanaian - Kenyan director Hawa Essuman. It was made under the supervision of the German director and film producer Tom Tykwer in Kibera , one of the largest slums on the African continent - in the middle of Nairobi , Kenya .

Nairobi , Kenya. 14-year-old Abila lives with his parents in Kibera, one of the largest slums in East Africa . On an ordinary morning, the boy finds his father sick and out of his mind. His soul was stolen from him, stammered his father, huddled in a corner. Abila, confused and shocked, wants to help him and goes in search of a possible cure.

Supported by his girlfriend Shiku, he finds out that his father has gambled away his soul with a ghost woman. The boy doesn't really want to believe it and goes in search of the witch. When he finally tracks her down in the darkest corners of the ghetto , she sets him seven challenging tasks to save his father's lost soul. Abila embarks on an adventurous journey across the microcosm of his hometown.

In September 2008, Marie Steinmann and Tom Tykwer met with Ginger and Guy Wilson (of the Nairobi-based film production company Ginger Ink) to launch a project that would reflect the work of One Fine Day e. V. and the British partner NGO Anno's Africa should expand into the field of film art. The concept for the pilot project was to develop a film workshop in Nairobi with a budget that was as manageable as possible.

Under the direction of Tom Tykwer, a small team of professional crew members with a much larger staff of young trainees was able to produce a medium-length feature film in Kibera, Nairobi's largest slum. The first goal was to integrate curious residents from Nairobi and hungry for learning, and of course residents of the slum in particular, into the practical work on an ambitious fiction film in order to impart technical knowledge, create career prospects and of course leave inspiring traces.

The project quickly developed astonishing momentum of its own. The Kenyan author Billy Kahora and Tykwer designed the concept for a film (Soul Boy), which translates the secrets and myths of this multi-layered social microcosm into a modern and at the same time fairytale-like story.

The young Ghanaian-Kenyan director Hawa Essuman took over the direction .

After a short, intensive research in Kibera, the script work took about six weeks. The casting for the film extended to the whole city; In several slums - with the support of Anno's Africa - young actors were sought simultaneously in schools and in the alleys.

Finally, Soul Boy was filmed from November 17 to December 1, 2008.
