history

On August 31, 1831 the Sparkasse Heidelberg was opened, whose sphere of activity was initially limited to the area of the city of Heidelberg. It was the time of the burgeoning savings bank idea, and so other savings banks emerged in the neighborhood, all with the aim of giving citizens access to financial services in the immediate vicinity.

These savings banks were - in addition to a large number of smaller ones - in 1859 the Sparkasse for the district of Schwetzingen, in 1863 the Städtische Sparkasse Wiesloch, 1875 the Sparkasse Hockenheim, 1878 the Städtische Sparkasse Schönau and in 1901 the savings and orphanage bank of the city of Neckargemünd.

In 1999 the district savings bank Schwetzingen and the district savings bank Wiesloch were integrated into the Sparkasse Heidelberg. In 2001 there was a merger with Sparkasse Neckargemünd-Schönau, followed in 2007 by Sparkasse Hockenheim.

In the period from 1996 to 2005, branches of the predecessor institutes of Sparkasse Heidelberg were attacked a total of eight times in the series of bank robberies in North Baden / Southern Palatinate , three times the branch in Altlußheim and twice the branch in St. Leon.
